This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

The threat reaches the neck and fills the land, yet the verse names Immanuel, “God with us”, inside that same scene.

An overwhelming force moves through Judah, rises to the neck, and covers the land’s breadth; the verse gives its reach no soft edge. Immanuel (⁨עִמָּנוּאֵל⁩, ʿImmanuʾel) means “God with us,” and the name stands within that flooded scene rather than outside it. Danger and presence are held together without the danger being minimized.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that a threat filling the whole landscape means God is absent; the verse names Immanuel while the flood is still at its height.

שָׁטַף

shataph

GROWS FROM

שׁטף

shataph

To flood, sweep over, or wash away.

“floods” in this verse is shataph. English “overflow” can sound like mere excess, but ⁨שׁטף⁩ carries the force of a flood that sweeps past boundaries. The verb and the noun for a flood share the same root: the advance is itself inundation.

ALSO GROWS

sheteph: Flood or torrent.

שֶׁטֶף

The noun makes the force in the verse tangible: this is a surge that covers what lies in its path.

shetifah: Washing or sweeping flow.

שְׁטִיפָה

This related form preserves the sense of a movement that passes across and over a surface.

כְּנָפָיו

kenafav

GROWS FROM

כנף

kanaph

Wing; an extremity or edge.

The Hebrew ⁨כָּנָף⁩ can name both a wing and an edge or corner, including the edge of a garment. The image holds spreading force and farthest reach together: the wings extend across the land’s breadth.

ALSO GROWS

kanaph: Wing or extremity.

כָּנָף

The wing supplies the image of a force spreading outward over the land.

kenaph: Edge or corner, as of a garment.

כְּנַף

The same root reaches from a wing to an outer edge, echoing how completely the threat extends.

רֹחַב

roḥav

GROWS FROM

רחב

raḥav

To be wide or spacious.

“width” in this verse is roḥav. The verse says the wings fill the ⁨רֹחַב⁩, the land’s breadth or open expanse. The root carries spaciousness, but here that whole space is occupied by the flood; the image is total, not merely a breach at the border.

ALSO GROWS

raḥav: Wide or spacious.

רָחָב

This adjective preserves the root’s sense of width in the word translated “breadth.”

merḥav: Open or spacious place.

מֶרְחָב

This noun from the same root makes clear that the space being filled is an expanse, not just a narrow passage.

Scripture depicts overwhelming force as water that crosses boundaries and bears down on what people inhabit or rely on.

I sink in the mire of waters, where there is no footing. I come into the depths of waters, and the flood sweeps over me.
Psalm 69:2 · SDVThe rising water becomes an image of a force that engulfs the speaker and removes any firm place to stand.
I will lay judgment to the measuring line, and alignment to the weighted line. Hail shall sweep away the shelter of lies, and waters shall sweep over the hiding place.
Isaiah 28:17 · SDVFloodwater crosses the boundary of a supposed refuge and overtakes what was meant to shelter.
And the rain came down, and the rivers came, and the winds breathed and fell against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.
Matthew 7:27 · SDVFlood and storm bear down on a dwelling until its hidden weakness is exposed.
Take counsel together, and it shall be broken; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.
Isaiah 8:10 · SDV

The name at the end of verse 8 is unfolded two verses later in the words “God is with us.” The threat fills the land, while the following line names Immanuel and declares that the counsel against it will not stand.
