This verse in the King James

King James wording
Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.

The verse repeats the call to gird up, but each time the same shattering follows.

The verse meets you at the moment of bracing for conflict: gathering strength, listening across distance, and tightening defenses do not by themselves secure the outcome. Its repeated cadence holds readiness beside the same repeated shattering, revealing how effort can intensify without changing what it meets.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that enough preparation makes collapse impossible dissolves here: each repeated call to gird ends in the same shattering.

וָחֹתּוּ

vaḥottu

GROWS FROM

חתת

ḥ-t-t

To be shattered, terrified, or dismayed

“be shattered” in this verse is vaḥottu. The root joins outward shattering with inward dismay: the breaking reaches both what can stand and the resolve within it. In this verse, repeated readiness does not keep that collapse from returning.

ALSO GROWS

teḥat: Be dismayed or terrified

תֵחָת

This form appears in Deuteronomy 31:8, showing that the same root behind outward breaking also names inward dismay.

meḥittah: Ruin or terror

מְחִתָּה

This related noun names the destructive state that follows, extending the root’s sense from shattering to its aftermath.

Human coalitions cannot secure their plans against what God establishes.

Take counsel together, and it shall be broken; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.
Isaiah 8:10 · SDVThe next verse names counsel and speech that fail to stand because God is with us.
The LORD breaks the counsel of nations; he undoes the plans of peoples.
Psalm 33:10 · SDVIt shows that even coordinated plans can be brought to nothing.
But if it is of God, you cannot undo them, lest perhaps you be found even fighting against God.
Acts 5:39 · SDVIt names the limit of human opposition: what is of God cannot be overthrown.
And the LORD is the one who goes before your face. He will be with you. He will not release you, nor leave you. Do not fear, and do not be shattered.
Deuteronomy 31:8 · SDV

Isaiah’s “broken in pieces” and Deuteronomy’s “be dismayed” come from the same Hebrew root, linking public collapse with inward terror. Deuteronomy names that same state as one the reader need not enter, because the LORD goes before them.
