This verse in the King James

King James wording
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

The light reaches people while they are still dwelling in deepest darkness; it does not wait for them to escape.

You may still be walking through darkness and dwelling in deepest darkness, yet light is shining upon you. Seeing begins where you are; the verse does not wait for your surroundings to change before light arrives.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It dissolves the belief that you must first get out of darkness to encounter light. Here, the light shines on those still dwelling in it.

אוֹר

ʾôr

GROWS FROM

א־ו־ר

ʾ-w-r

To be light or luminous; to shine.

The first “light” is ⁨אוֹר⁩ (ʾôr, light), while the final “shined” is ⁨נָגַהּ⁩ (nāgah, shine forth): Hebrew distinguishes the radiance from the act of its arrival. The light is not only seen; it shines upon people still dwelling in darkness.

ALSO GROWS

ʾôrāh: Light, brightness.

אוֹרָה

The same root names brightness as what appears in the dark.

māʾôr: Luminary, a body or source of light.

מָאוֹר

This branch gives light a visible presence, echoing the great light the people see.

נָגַהּ

nāgah

GROWS FROM

נ־ג־ה

n-g-h

To shine forth, gleam, or send out rays.

“has dawned” in this verse is nāgah. The verb gives the light direction: it shines “upon them.” The action moves toward people in the dark; they do not have to make themselves luminous first.

ALSO GROWS

nōgah: Radiance, brightness.

נֹגַהּ

The noun form makes visible the radiance carried by the shining in this verse.

nāgah: To shine or gleam.

נָגַהּ

This verb describes light reaching the people, not a change they produce in themselves.

חֹשֶׁךְ

ḥōshekh

GROWS FROM

ח־ש־ך

ḥ-sh-kh

To be dark or grow dim.

The root holds both darkness as a condition and the dimming that produces it. Beside the image of people walking and dwelling there, the verse lets darkness be both a place they move through and a place they inhabit, without saying they have already left it.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāshakh: To darken, be dark, or grow dim.

חָשַׁךְ

This verbal branch reveals darkness as a condition that can take shape, rather than only a fixed location.

ḥōshekh: Darkness or gloom.

חֹשֶׁךְ

This is the darkness the light shines upon; it remains present in the verse as the light reaches the people.

Light becomes visible within darkness before the darkness is said to end.

Do not rejoice against me, O my enemy. When I fall, I will rise; when I settle in darkness, the LORD will be a light to me.
Micah 7:8 · SDVThe speaker sits in darkness, and the LORD is light to them there.
Light rises in the darkness for the upright; he shows favor, full of compassion, and aligned.
Psalm 112:4 · SDVLight arises in the very darkness that seems to conceal it.
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not take hold of it.
John 1:5 · SDVLight shines within darkness, while darkness does not extinguish it.
Light rises in the darkness for the upright; he shows favor, full of compassion, and aligned.
Psalm 112:4 · SDV

Its Hebrew repeats Isaiah’s same roots: ⁨אוֹר⁩ (ʾôr, light) and ⁨חֹשֶׁךְ⁩ (ḥōshekh, darkness). Isaiah says light shines upon those dwelling in darkness; Psalm says light arises in darkness, placing the radiance inside the very condition that seems to exclude it.
