This verse in the King James

King James wording
Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:

The verse gives the lowly brother his own height: low condition and exalted standing belong in the same sentence.

The verse places low standing and exaltation side by side in your life. Your present condition does not exhaust your standing; the verse names a height that is yours too. Rejoicing comes from seeing both named at once.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that low standing means you have no honor or height.

ταπεινός

tapeinos

GROWS FROM

ταπειν-

tapein-

low, brought down, humble

“low brother” in this verse is tapeinos. The Greek calls the brother lowly, but does not leave him there: the same verse names his height. Lowliness and elevation belong to one person in the verse.

ALSO GROWS

tapeinoō: To lower or humble.

ταπεινόω

The related verb names the lowliness that appears in the verse’s opening description.

tapeinōsis: A low condition or humbling.

ταπείνωσις

It shows that this word family can describe a person’s condition, not just a posture of humility.

ὕψει

hypsēi

GROWS FROM

ὑψ-

hyps-

height, elevation

The Greek phrase is literally “in his height” (⁨ἐν τῷ ὕψει αὐτοῦ⁩, en tō hypsēi autou). The possessive “his” places height alongside the brother’s low condition as something that belongs to him.

ALSO GROWS

hypsoō: To lift up or exalt.

ὑψόω

It supplies the related verb for the elevation named in this verse.

hypsēlos: High in position or height.

ὑψηλός

It makes the root’s image of height concrete: the brother’s low condition is not the only measure of his standing.

In God’s ordering, lowliness does not erase elevation; the low are lifted.

The LORD strips, and makes rich; he lays low, and lifts high.
1 Samuel 2:7 · SDVThe verse places being brought low and being lifted up within one movement.
For everyone who lifts himself will be brought low; and the one who lowers himself will be lifted up.
Luke 14:11 · SDVThe lowly are exalted, while assumed height is brought down.
So be made low under the strong hand of God, that he may lift you up in season.
1 Peter 5:6 · SDVIt joins lowliness with a promised lifting, as James 1:9 joins low condition with height.
Be made low before the face of the LORD, and he will lift you up.
James 4:10 · SDV

James 4:10 links ⁨ταπεινόω⁩ (tapeinoō, to humble or bring low) with ⁨ὑψόω⁩ (hypsoō, to lift high or exalt). James 1:9 holds the same lowliness and height together in the brother himself.
