This verse in the King James

King James wording
Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

Partiality and judgment are one act here: both grow from the same Greek root of dividing and deciding.

Favoritism divides the people before you and divides your judgment within you. When you elevate someone by appearance, your reasoning is already tilted; you become a judge whose thoughts are shaped by that ranking.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that preference can remain neutral, that ranking people by what they display leaves your judgment clean. This verse exposes the ranking itself as the beginning of the judgment.

διεκρίθητε

diekrithēte

GROWS FROM

κριν-

krin-

To separate, distinguish, decide, or judge.

“divided within yourselves” in this verse is diekrithēte. English makes “partial” and “judges” sound like separate problems. In Greek they share the same root: dividing people into ranks is already a judgment, and the judgment formed by those divisions is called evil.

ALSO GROWS

kritai: judges

κριταί

The verse uses this word for “judges,” revealing that the division named by “partial” and the judging that follows share a root.

krisis: judgment or decision

κρίσις

This branch shows the root’s movement from distinguishing between people to making a judgment about them.

When outward distinctions divide people into ranks, judgment follows that division; a person’s worth is not measured by appearance.

You shall not recognize faces in judgment; hear and respond to the small as well as the great; do not shrink from the face of man; for the judgment is God's; and the word that is too hard for you, draw it near to me, and I will hear and respond to it.
Deuteronomy 1:17 · SDVThe verse rejects rank and appearance as measures in judgment, because the judgment belongs to God.
But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have pushed him away. The LORD does not see as the human sees. The human sees what is outside, but the LORD sees the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7 · SDVThe verse exposes the outward appearance as a poor measure of the person beneath it.
Then Peter opened his mouth and said, In truth I have laid hold of this, that God lifts no one's face.
Acts 10:34 · SDVThe verse declares that God does not assign human worth by status or distinction.
Therefore you have no word to answer with, O human, whoever you are who judges others, for in whatever you judge in another you press the sentence down upon yourself, for you who judge practice the very same things.
Romans 2:1 · SDV

Romans carries the same root heard in James’s “partial” and “judges”: the act of judging another loops back onto the one who judges. James shows that loop beginning in the division itself.
