King James wording
King James Version
For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.THE KEY
The flock’s scattering begins in the shepherds’ failure to seek the LORD, before it appears in the field.
THE MEANING
When those who guide a people stop seeking the LORD, their judgment becomes brutish: they do not act with understanding, and the flock is scattered. The verse speaks now wherever a failure of inward orientation becomes outward disintegration among those entrusted to that care.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a leader’s neglect remains private: when shepherds stop seeking the LORD, the flock bears the consequence.
THE ROOT
דָּרְשׁוּ
darshu
GROWS FROM
דרש
To seek, inquire, or search out.
“sought” in this verse is darshu. The verse frames the shepherds’ failure as a failure of inquiry: they do not turn to seek the LORD, and the wisdom needed to tend the flock collapses. The next verb, sakal, makes the consequence more than material failure: they do not understand or act with discernment.
ALSO GROWS
midrash: Inquiry or exposition.
מִדְרָשׁ
This branch carries the sense of actively searching out meaning, showing that seeking involves more than a passing glance.
doresh: One who seeks or inquires.
דֹּרֵשׁ
The same root names the seeker; the missing action here is the leaders turning toward inquiry.
הִשְׂכִּילוּ
hiskilu
GROWS FROM
שׂכל
To understand, act with discernment, or succeed.
English “prosper” can sound like material success, but this Hebrew verb also means to understand and act wisely. The verse links the shepherds’ failure to seek the LORD with lost discernment and the flock’s scattering.
ALSO GROWS
sekel: Understanding or prudence.
שֵׂכֶל
This noun makes the wisdom within “prosper” visible: success here involves sound understanding.
maskil: One who understands or acts skillfully; also an instructional composition.
מַשְׂכִּיל
This related form joins discernment with skillful action, the very capacity the shepherds lack.
הָרֹעִים
haro’im
GROWS FROM
רעה
To tend, graze, feed, or shepherd.
“shepherds” in this verse is haro’im. The Hebrew word names the active work of tending and feeding, not just a position of authority. The ones meant to nourish the flock stop seeking the LORD, and the flock disperses.
ALSO GROWS
ro’eh: A shepherd or one who tends.
רֹעֶה
This is the singular form of the role named in the verse: care expressed through tending.
mir’eh: Pasture or grazing ground.
מִרְעֶה
The pasture branch makes the shepherd’s purpose concrete: providing the place and nourishment where the flock can remain.
THE PATTERN
When shepherding fails, the people entrusted to it are left exposed and scattered.
They were scattered, because there is no shepherd, and they became food for every beast of the field, when they were scattered. But seeing the crowds, his insides moved for them, because they were loosened and thrown down, like sheep having no shepherd. But the hired hand, who is not the shepherd, and whose sheep they are not, sees the wolf coming, and lets go of the sheep, and flees. And the wolf snatches them and scatters them.THE THREAD
And I will give you shepherds according to my heart, who will feed you with knowing and with insight. The same Hebrew shepherd-root names the role in both verses: here its failure ends in scattering; there, shepherds after God’s heart feed the people with knowledge and understanding. The shared root shows that tending is nourishment, not merely holding office.
