King James wording
King James Version
Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?THE KEY
The verse holds the LORD’s righteousness beside the wicked’s forward movement, so success is not silently equated with goodness.
THE MEANING
The verse holds two convictions together: the LORD is righteous, and the wicked’s way is succeeding. The question about why treachery succeeds is spoken directly to God and remains unresolved here.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that naming apparent injustice or questioning it means denying God’s righteousness.
THE ROOT
צָלְחָה
tsāləḥāh
GROWS FROM
צלח
advance, make progress, succeed
“break through” in this verse is tsāləḥāh. English “prosper” can sound like a settled condition, while צלח (ts-l-ḥ) also names advancing and making progress. The verse asks why the wicked keep succeeding, even as the LORD’s righteousness remains affirmed beside the question.
ALSO GROWS
tsālaḥ: advance, succeed
צָלַח
This form makes the forward movement within “prosper” visible: the wicked’s way keeps making headway.
hiṣlîaḥ: cause to succeed, make prosper
הִצְלִיחַ
This causative form shares the same root and shows that it can describe making a path succeed, sharpening the question of why treacherous paths advance.
THE PATTERN
Scripture lets the apparent success of the wicked become a direct question addressed to God.
Why do the wicked live, grow old, and even grow mighty in strength? For I burn with envy at the boasting ones when I see the wholeness of the wicked.Your eyes are too clean to see harm, and you cannot gaze at toil. Why do you look upon the treacherous ones, and hold your tongue when the wicked swallows the man more aligned than he?THE THREAD
And he becomes like a tree planted by the channels of the waters, that gives its fruit in its season; its leaf does not wither; whatever he does, he breaks through.Psalm 1:3 uses the same Hebrew root צלח for the fruitful person’s path that “shall prosper.” The shared verb sharpens Jeremiah’s tension: the question is not whether a path advances, but why treacherous paths do.
