This verse in the King James

King James wording
In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from the LORD, saying,

At the start of a king’s reign, the Hebrew word for “word” also means “matter,” placing the LORD’s utterance inside the reality the king will rule.

A new order can feel as though its authority begins and ends with the one who rules. Yet the word from the LORD is present at that threshold, speaking into the matter itself. Even the name Jehoiakim, “the LORD raises”, locates elevation beyond the ruler who bears it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A change in rule is only a human event, with no word from the LORD inside its unfolding.

דָּבָר

davar

GROWS FROM

ד־ב־ר

To speak or utter; the noun davar can mean a word, matter, or affair.

The same Hebrew word can name both what is spoken and the matter at hand. The word from the LORD is therefore not weightless commentary: it enters the very matter of a reign.

ALSO GROWS

dibber: He spoke

דִּבֵּר

This verbal form makes the utterance in the verse an active address.

devarim: Words, matters, or affairs

דְּבָרִים

This plural keeps speech and the matters it addresses within the same word family.

רֵאשִׁית

reshit

GROWS FROM

רֹאשׁ

Head, chief, or first.

The verse marks the head of a reign, its leading edge, not only a point on a timeline. The word from the LORD meets the beginning before the shape of that rule is settled.

ALSO GROWS

rosh: Head or chief

רֹאשׁ

It shows the image beneath “beginning”: the head or foremost part.

rishon: First or foremost

רִאשׁוֹן

This related form carries the same sense of what comes at the front.

יְהוֹיָקִים

Yehoyaqim

GROWS FROM

קוּם

To rise, stand, or be established.

Jehoiakim means “the LORD raises” or “the LORD establishes,” combining the divine name with a form of qum. At the start of his reign, even the king’s name locates his standing in a source beyond himself.

ALSO GROWS

qam: He stood or rose

קָם

It makes the root’s basic movement visible in the name.

heqim: He raised or established

הֵקִים

This causative form echoes the “raises” sense carried in Jehoiakim’s name.

A word from God stands at the threshold where lived reality takes shape.

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
Genesis 1:3 · SDVThe spoken word stands at the beginning of the light coming into view.
By the word of the LORD the heavens are made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth.
Psalm 33:6 · SDVThe verse joins the LORD’s word with the forming of the heavens.
In the beginning was the word, and the word was turned toward God, and the word was God.
John 1:1 · SDVThe Word is present at the beginning itself, not added after the world takes shape.
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Jeremiah 1:4 · SDV

Both verses place the same ⁨דָּבָר⁩, “word” or “matter,” at a threshold: here at the beginning of a reign, there as the LORD addresses Jeremiah. The repeated phrase lets you see the word as an arrival into the matter now unfolding.
