This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.

A voice invokes the LORD’s authority while declaring a release that the surrounding passage still puts to the test.

Hananiah’s voice claims that the LORD has already shattered Babylon’s yoke. The wording gives release the weight of a completed act and places it under the LORD’s name. The surrounding exchange tests whether the claimed breaking becomes reality.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A statement does not become the LORD’s word simply by using the LORD’s name; a declaration of release is still answerable to whether the yoke is actually broken.

שָׁבַרְתִּי

shavarti

GROWS FROM

שבר

shabar

To shatter or break apart.

“have broken” in this verse is shavarti. The root gives the claim the force of an actual rupture, not merely a loosening of pressure. The same seed names both the breaking and the breach it leaves, while the surrounding chapter asks whether this break is real.

ALSO GROWS

shever: Fracture, breach, or ruin.

שֶׁבֶר

This branch names the rupture itself, sharpening the force of the claim that the yoke is broken.

mishbar: Breaker, surf, or breaking wave.

מִשְׁבָּר

The image keeps the root’s force physical: what is broken meets the impact of a breaking force.

A claimed word from God is known by whether the promised reality comes to pass.

When the prophet speaks in the nature of the LORD, if the word does not come to be, nor arrive, it is the word the LORD has not spoken, but the prophet has spoken it in a boiling over. You shall not cower from him.
Deuteronomy 18:22 · SDVThe claim’s source is tested by whether what it announces comes to pass.
The prophet who prophesies of wholeness, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then the prophet shall be known, that the LORD has truly sent him.
Jeremiah 28:9 · SDVThe promised peace becomes evidence of whether the speaker is truly sent.
Beloved, do not lean your weight on every breath, but test the breaths, whether they come out of God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 John 4:1 · SDVA claim about its divine source remains something to test.
And it shall be in that day, declares the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off your neck, and I will tear away your bonds, and strangers shall no longer make him serve.
Jeremiah 30:8 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨שבר⁩ (shabar), meaning “break apart,” for the yoke’s rupture. Jeremiah 30:8 joins that breaking to burst bonds and ended service, opening the image of a broken yoke into a fuller release from domination.
