King James wording
King James Version
And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.THE KEY
The same root, שׁוּב (shuv, return), names both the reversal of captivity and the return to the very place from which you were driven.
THE MEANING
You are not beyond being found in the places where you have been scattered: the promise meets you there and gathers you from every nation and place. It holds forced removal in view and promises return to the very place of loss.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that being driven away means being abandoned for good is undone: the scattering itself is within reach of return.
THE ROOT
שׁוּב
shuv
GROWS FROM
שׁוּב
Return, turn back, bring back
“turn back your captivity” in this verse is shuv. The Hebrew uses שָׁבְתִּי (shavti, I will restore or turn back) for the captivity phrase, then וַהֲשִׁבֹתִי (vahashivoti, I will bring back) for bringing you to the place of removal. שְׁבוּת (shevut, captivity or fortunes) echoes the sound of שׁוּב, but the verse’s clear root connection is the repeated return verb: restoration and homecoming belong to one movement.
ALSO GROWS
heshiv: Bring back, restore
הֵשִׁיב
This causative form of shuv appears in the promise to bring you back to the place from which you were carried away.
teshuvah: Return, turning
תְּשׁוּבָה
This noun makes the root’s movement visible: return is a turning back toward what was lost.
קָבַץ
qavats
GROWS FROM
קבץ
Gather together, collect
“gather” in this verse is qavats. The verse names every nation and every place as within the reach of this gathering. The same speaker who drove you there now gathers you from there, making gathering the reversal of dispersion.
ALSO GROWS
qibbetz: Gathered, assembled
קִבֵּץ
This form carries the same act of collecting people together that the verse promises.
meqabbetz: One who gathers
מְקַבֵּץ
It names the gathering action as something the LORD does for those scattered across many places.
THE PATTERN
The one who scatters is also able to gather, and return reaches people across every place of dispersion.
Then the LORD your God will turn back your captivity, and have compassion upon you, and will turn back and gather you from all the nations where the LORD your God has scattered you.Hear and respond to the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the far islands, and say, The one who scattered Israel will gather him and guard him, as a shepherd tends his flock. And not for that nation only, but that he would also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.THE THREAD
Then the LORD your God will turn back your captivity, and have compassion upon you, and will turn back and gather you from all the nations where the LORD your God has scattered you.Deuteronomy joins שׁוּב (shuv, return or restore) with קבץ (qavats, gather), the same two roots shaping Jeremiah’s promise. Jeremiah makes the return concrete: it reaches you from every place and ends at the place from which you were carried away.
