This verse in the King James

King James wording
Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?

The “guide” is an intimate companion as well as a leader, so calling God “My Father” speaks of closeness that can also be betrayed.

The verse gives the reader words of intimate address: “My Father,” the guide of my youth. That name reaches beyond direction to a bond of familiarity and formation. The question holds the claimed closeness beside the possibility of estrangement.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It unsettles the belief that calling God “Father” by itself proves fidelity; the verse sets that intimate name against a relationship in rupture.

אַלּוּף

alluph

GROWS FROM

אלף

Familiarity or association; the related verb can mean to teach or train.

⁨אַלּוּף⁩ (alluph) can name a close companion or a chief, so “guide” carries both intimacy and authority. Proverbs 2:17 uses the same phrase, “the guide of her youth,” for one forsaken alongside a forgotten covenant; that echo lets the address “My Father” carry the strain of closeness that can be betrayed.

ALSO GROWS

alluph: Chief or leader; for example, the clan leaders named in Genesis 36:15.

אַלּוּף

The same noun’s leadership sense gives “guide” an aspect of authority as well as companionship.

waʾallefka: “And I will teach you” (Job 33:33), from ⁨אָלַף⁩ (ʾalaph), to teach or instruct.

וַאֲאַלֶּפְךָ

This related verb links guidance with being taught and shaped over time, fitting the phrase “of my youth.”

A familial address makes belonging speakable even where estrangement or dependence remains.

But I said, How shall I set you among the children, and give you a desirable land, a beautiful inheritance of the hosts of nations? And I said, You will call me, My father, and you will not turn back from behind me.
Jeremiah 3:19 · SDVThe father-name is offered as a bond whose speech carries an expectation of not turning away.
For you are our father, though Abraham does not perceive us, and Israel does not recognize us. You, O LORD, are our father, our redeemer. Your name has been from the ages.
Isaiah 63:16 · SDVThe address “our father” remains speakable even when human belonging feels absent.
For you have not received a breath of slavery to return to fear; but you have received the breath that places us as sons, by which we cry out, Abba, Father.
Romans 8:15 · SDVThe cry “Abba, Father” names belonging from within dependence.
Who lets go of the companion of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her God.
Proverbs 2:17 · SDV

Proverbs uses the same Hebrew phrase, ⁨אַלּוּף נְעוּרֶיהָ⁩ (alluph neʿureha), “the guide of her youth.” There the guide is forsaken as covenant is forgotten, so Jeremiah’s address makes intimacy and the possibility of betrayal sound together.
