King James wording
King James Version
Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.THE KEY
The people stream toward goodness, and their living soul becomes a saturated garden, the gathering and the flourishing are one movement.
THE MEANING
You are among a people who come singing toward the LORD’s goodness, where provision reaches the whole living self. Your soul is pictured as a watered garden, surrounded by food, drink, oil, and care for the young of the flock and herd. Sorrow does not remain the final condition.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that sorrow is permanent is undone: the verse says you will not sorrow anymore.
THE ROOT
וְנָהֲרוּ
wə-nāhărû
GROWS FROM
נהר
To flow or stream; the same consonants also carry a sense of shining or radiating.
“flow toward” in this verse is wə-nāhărû. The people do not merely arrive at goodness; they stream toward it. This root also carries the image of radiance, so the gathering holds the feel of a river’s movement and a growing brightness.
ALSO GROWS
nāhār: River, stream
נָהָר
The noun names a channel of flowing water, giving the people’s movement toward goodness the shape of a river.
nāhar: To shine, beam, radiate
נָהַר
This related form lets the gathering carry brightness as well as movement.
נַפְשָׁם
nafsham
GROWS FROM
נפש
The living self, with the root also carrying the sense of being refreshed.
“living soul” in this verse is nafsham. The verse’s “soul” is the living self, not a detached inner part. That whole self is pictured as able to be refreshed and to flourish like a garden.
ALSO GROWS
nefesh: Living soul, person, living self
נֶפֶשׁ
This is the living self that the verse pictures as a watered garden.
yinnāfēsh: Be refreshed
יִנָּפֵשׁ
This related verb shows that refreshment belongs within the root’s range, matching the soul’s renewed flourishing.
רָוָה
ravah
GROWS FROM
רוה
To drink one’s fill; to become saturated.
“drenched garden” in this verse is ravah. The Hebrew image holds more than a garden receiving a little water: it is saturated. The living soul’s flourishing is pictured as fullness reaching the ground itself.
ALSO GROWS
ravah: Drink one’s fill; be satiated
רָוָה
Satiation gives the garden image a sense of fullness rather than mere survival.
raveh: Saturated, well-watered
רָוֶה
This form describes the garden’s condition as filled with water.
THE PATTERN
When divine provision reaches the living self, it sustains life and produces enduring fruitfulness.
And he becomes like a tree planted by the channels of the waters, that gives its fruit in its season; its leaf does not wither; whatever he does, he breaks through. The one who leans his weight into me, as the writing has said, rivers of living waters will flow from his belly.THE THREAD
And the LORD shall lead you continually, and fill your living soul in the parched places, and strengthen your bones. You shall be like a drenched garden, and like a spring of water whose waters never fail.Isaiah uses the same garden-and-saturation image, from the root רוה (ravah, to be saturated). It opens Jeremiah’s picture further: the living soul is satisfied even in drought, like a garden sustained by a spring that does not fail.
