This verse in the King James

King James wording
I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.

The paired words “without form, and void” turn the verse into creation running backward: ground, sky, and illumination have all lost their ordering.

The earth and heavens still exist, yet neither gives the signs of an ordered, habitable world: the land is unformed and empty, and the sky gives no light. This speaks now wherever life feels stripped of shape and illumination; it names the condition without pretending it is small. The verse lets devastation be seen at the scale it occupies.

אוֹרָם

oram

GROWS FROM

אור

ʾwr

Light; to become light or shine.

The heavens have no ⁨אוֹר⁩, or, light, the same root carried by ⁨מָאוֹר⁩, ma’or, a luminary, in the creation account. The image removes both illumination and its bearer, so the sky no longer supplies what lets the world appear ordered.

ALSO GROWS

ma'or: A luminary or light-bearing source.

מָאוֹר

This branch shares the root of light itself; its absence leaves the heavens without a bearer of illumination.

orah: Light or radiance.

אוֹרָה

This branch shows the root naming not only a source but the radiance that fills a scene.

The world’s undoing is pictured as creation’s ordering withdrawn: emptiness on the ground and darkness in the heavens.

And the earth was unshaped and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the breath of God was fluttering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:2 · SDVThe same paired description of the earth appears with darkness, presenting the world before its ordering.
The pelican and the hedgehog take hold of it, and the owl and the raven pitch their tents in it. He stretches out upon it the measuring cord of waste and the stones of emptiness.
Isaiah 34:11 · SDVConfusion and emptiness mark a land whose former order has collapsed.
Immediately after the pressure of those days, the sun is darkened, and the moon does not give its glow, and the stars fall from the heavens, and the strength of the heavens is shaken.
Matthew 24:29 · SDVThe darkening sky and shaken heavens echo the loss of light and stability in Jeremiah’s vision.
And the earth was unshaped and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the breath of God was fluttering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:2 · SDV

Genesis 1:2 carries the same paired Hebrew words: ⁨תֹּהוּ⁩ (tohu, formless desolation) and ⁨בֹּהוּ⁩ (bohu, emptiness), beside darkness. Here that creation-opening image becomes an image of undoing: Jeremiah 4:23 sounds like the world has returned to the state before its ordering.
