King James wording
King James Version
Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the brickkiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;THE KEY
The stones hidden beneath Pharaoh’s threshold are already being positioned as the base of another ruler’s throne.
THE MEANING
Large stones pass from a hand into the clay of a brickkiln at Pharaoh’s doorway, while Judah’s men witness the hiding. The covering leaves the stones in place at the entrance to royal power; the next verse reveals them as the ground beneath a throne.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that what is hidden has vanished; the stones remain at Pharaoh’s threshold, placed there in full view.
THE ROOT
אֲבָנִים
avanim
GROWS FROM
אבן
ʾ-b-n
stone
“stones” in this verse is avanim. The stone-word names the actual masonry tucked beneath the threshold, and the next verse sets a king’s throne upon it. The sound of אֶבֶן (even, stone) also echoes אָב (av, father) and בֵּן (ben, son), gathering father and son within the stone as a layered name-reading.
ALSO GROWS
even ha-roshah: capstone, headstone
אֶבֶן הָרֹאשָׁה
In Zechariah 4:7, the stone occupies the head of the structure, echoing how these hidden stones become a throne’s base.
even ma'asu habbonim: the stone the builders rejected
אֶבֶן מָאֲסוּ הַבּוֹנִים
Psalm 118:22 shows a stone’s position can turn: what builders reject becomes the head of the corner.
וּטְמַנְתָּם
u-temantam
GROWS FROM
טמן
ṭ-m-n
to conceal, hide, or bury
“bury” in this verse is u-temantam. This root describes concealment that leaves something present in its place. The stones are covered, yet their hidden position remains part of the royal threshold and the throne that will stand there.
ALSO GROWS
tamun: hidden, concealed
טָמוּן
This form keeps the emphasis on what lies out of sight; the stones remain physically present beneath the brickwork.
matmon: hidden treasure or stored thing
מַטְמוֹן
A hidden thing can be kept in place rather than lost, as the stones are set beneath the threshold.
פֶּתַח
petach
GROWS FROM
פתח
p-t-ḥ
to open, make an opening
The word for the entry is tied to opening: this is the access point of Pharaoh’s house, not an arbitrary hiding place. The concealed stones sit where passage into royal power begins.
ALSO GROWS
patach: to open
פָּתַח
The verb names the opening action within the same root as the doorway where the stones are hidden.
mafteach: key
מַפְתֵּחַ
The key opens access; here the stone placement marks the threshold through which one enters the ruler’s house.
THE PATTERN
The placement of a stone at a structure’s decisive point can expose which authority will stand over it.
Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a weighty cornerstone, a foundation set firm. The one who leans his weight will not hurry. The stone the builders push away becomes the head of the corner. This is the stone you builders treated as nothing, which has become the head of the corner.THE THREAD
And say to them, Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel. Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have buried, and he shall stretch out his tent over them.“These stones” points directly back to the stones hidden in verse 9, repeating the same Hebrew stone-word. The next line reveals that concealment as placement: a throne is set upon the very stones buried at Pharaoh’s threshold.
