What Does Jeremiah 44:22 Mean?

So the LORD could no longer bear it, because of the evil of your deeds, and because of the loathsome things you have done. Therefore your land is dried out, a desolation, a curse, with no one who settles in it, as on this day.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
So that the LORD could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which ye have committed; therefore is your land a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as at this day.

What can no longer be borne leaves its weight visible in the land that becomes empty.

The LORD can no longer bear the weight of your deeds and abominations; the land is desolate, shocking, cursed, and without an inhabitant. What is done reaches the shared ground, where absence itself becomes visible.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that destructive acts stay private and carry no consequence dissolves here: their weight reaches beyond the act and empties the shared ground.

לָשֵׂאת

lāśēt

GROWS FROM

נָשָׂא

nasa

To lift, carry, or bear; in some contexts, to take away.

“bear” in this verse is lāśēt. The phrase pictures a load that is no longer being carried, not mere passive tolerance. The root also gives a word for a burden and a title for one lifted up, holding the carrying, its weight, and elevation within one seed.

ALSO GROWS

maśśāʾ: Burden, load; also oracle.

מַשָּׂא

A burden is something borne, making the verse’s weight more concrete than the English word “bear” may suggest.

nāśîʾ: Prince, chief; one elevated.

נָשִׂיא

The same root that carries a weight can describe one lifted up, linking bearing with lifting.

Bearing transfers weight: it can be carried away, sustained by God, shared among people, or left where the carrying stops.

The goat carries upon himself all their crookedness into a cut-off land, and he sends the goat away into the wilderness.
Leviticus 16:22 · SDVThe burden is carried away until it reaches a land without inhabitants.
Even to old age I AM, and to gray hair I will bear you. I have made, and I will lift, I will bear, and I will slip you free.
Isaiah 46:4 · SDVGod’s repeated bearing shows weight being carried through a person’s whole life.
Carry one another's weights, and so you fill up the instruction of the Anointed One.
Galatians 6:2 · SDVThe weight is shared among people rather than left with one person alone.
The goat carries upon himself all their crookedness into a cut-off land, and he sends the goat away into the wilderness.
Leviticus 16:22 · SDV

Jeremiah’s “could no longer bear” and Leviticus’s “shall bear upon him” use the same Hebrew root ⁨נָשָׂא⁩ (nasa, to lift, carry, or bear). In Leviticus, the people’s iniquities are carried to an uninhabited land; here, the land itself becomes uninhabited when the bearing can no longer continue.
