This verse in the King James

King James wording
Order ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.

The verse puts protection in order before you enter battle, making preparation part of the encounter itself.

You stand at the edge of conflict as the buckler and shield are arranged, then the command moves you forward. Defense and confrontation occupy the same moment: protection is readied for an encounter that is still coming.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that being prepared means no confrontation will come dissolves here: the gear is ordered as the approach to battle begins.

וְעִרְכוּ

veʿirkhu

GROWS FROM

ערך

ʿ-r-kh

Arrange, set in order, array.

“lay out ... in rows” in this verse is veʿirkhu. The command translated “order” comes from a root that also names a battle formation and the laying out of a prayer before God. Preparation here is deliberate arrangement: protection is set into place before the moment of encounter.

ALSO GROWS

maʿărākāh: Battle array, formation.

מַעֲרָכָה

The same root names a battle arranged in formation, clarifying that the shields are being put into an ordered readiness.

eʿĕrākh: I arrange or lay out.

אֶעֱרָךְ

In Psalm 5:3, this form describes laying out a prayer before God; the root joins the ordering of defense with the ordering of an appeal.

Readiness takes shape by arranging protection before the clash.

And it was told David, and he gathered all Israel together, and crossed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in rows against them. So when David had set the battle in rows against the Syrians, they fought with him.
1 Chronicles 19:17 · SDVBattle is met after forces are deliberately arranged into an array.
A Psalm of David. Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for war.
Psalm 144:1 · SDVReadiness for conflict takes shape through hands trained for the encounter.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having worked through all things, to stand.
Ephesians 6:13 · SDVThe armor is taken up so that you can remain standing when the conflict arrives.
And it was told David, and he gathered all Israel together, and crossed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in rows against them. So when David had set the battle in rows against the Syrians, they fought with him.
1 Chronicles 19:17 · SDV

The Hebrew uses the same ⁨ערך⁩ (ʿ-r-kh) root behind “order” when it says the battle is set in array. Jeremiah’s command carries the sense of arranging the defenses into formation before closing with battle.
