What Does Jeremiah 48:11 Mean?
Moab has been at ease from his youth. He lies still upon his dregs, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, and has not gone into captivity. Therefore his taste stands in him, and his scent is not changed.

King James wording
King James Version
Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.THE KEY
In this image, ease preserves what it never disturbs: the wine keeps its old taste because it has never been poured out.
THE MEANING
A life left undisturbed can keep the same sediment, taste, and scent; nothing has poured it from one vessel into another or carried it away. The quiet here is continuity without change, not proof that change has already happened.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that an undisturbed life must have changed inwardly: what has not been poured out can keep its old taste intact.
THE ROOT
הוּרַק
hurak
GROWS FROM
ריק
To be empty; to empty or pour out.
The Hebrew uses ריק here in the passive: Moab has not been emptied. The next verse uses the same root for the emptying that is coming, so the stillness here is defined by a pouring that has never happened.
ALSO GROWS
hēriq: To empty or pour out.
הֵרִיק
This is the active form of the same root used when the vessels are emptied in Jeremiah 48:12.
reqam: Empty-handed, without anything in hand.
רֵיקָם
It shows how the root of emptying also describes what remains when nothing has been given or carried away.
טַעְמוֹ
taʿamo
GROWS FROM
טעם
To taste, and by extension to discern or judge.
The Hebrew word taʿam can name flavor as well as discernment or judgment. Because the verse says the taste remains unchanged, the image can also echo an unchanged way of perceiving: what is retained inwardly has never been disturbed.
ALSO GROWS
ṭāʿam: To taste.
טָעַם
This is the sensory act behind the wine’s unchanged flavor.
ṭaʿam: Discernment, judgment, or reason.
טַעַם
This wider sense lets the wine’s unchanged taste suggest an inner perception that has also remained as it was.
שְׁמָרָיו
shemarav
GROWS FROM
שמר
To keep, guard, or preserve.
The word for lees, shemarim, belongs to the family of keeping and guarding: the settled deposit is what has remained at the bottom. The image is not blank stillness but the preservation of the wine’s existing mixture and flavor.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: A keeper or watchman.
שֹׁמֵר
It shares the root’s sense of something or someone kept under watch.
mishmeret: A guard, charge, or watch.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
It carries the sense of keeping something in place, as the lees remain settled in the vessel.
THE PATTERN
What remains undisturbed keeps its former character until it is poured into a new condition.
Therefore, look, the days are coming, says the LORD, that I will send to him those who stagger, and they shall make him stagger. They shall empty his vessels, and shatter their jars. And in that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will visit upon the men who thicken on their dregs, those who say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, nor will he do harm.Nor do they pour new wine into old wineskins, for otherwise the skins burst and the wine is poured out, and the skins perish. But they pour new wine into new skins, and both are kept together.THE THREAD
Therefore, look, the days are coming, says the LORD, that I will send to him those who stagger, and they shall make him stagger. They shall empty his vessels, and shatter their jars.Verse 11 says Moab has not been emptied; verse 12 says his vessels will be emptied. Both forms grow from ריק, so the untouched state and the coming disruption are one verbal movement.
