King James wording
King James Version
And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting; their shouting shall be no shouting.THE KEY
The same word-family that names harvest’s ingathering makes this loss feel like a harvest turned inside out: joy itself is gathered out.
THE MEANING
Joy and gladness are taken from the plentiful field and from Moab; God says, “I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses,” and the treaders’ shout becomes no shout. The verse speaks now of shared life losing its yield, livelihood, and public celebration together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A place’s abundance guarantees that the joy and communal life it supports are secure.
THE ROOT
וְנֶאֶסְפָה
wene'esfah
GROWS FROM
אסף
asaph
Gather, collect; in this form, be gathered away.
“gathered away” in this verse is wene'esfah. The Hebrew word behind “taken” is a form of asaph, the root of gathering and collection. Its word-family also names the harvest’s ingathering, so the verse lets joy’s removal echo a gathering-in turned toward loss: the field is emptied, and the press falls silent.
ALSO GROWS
asaf: To gather or collect.
אָסַף
This root’s ordinary sense of gathering deepens “taken”: joy is pictured as gathered away from the field.
asif: Ingathering; harvest.
אָסִיף
This harvest word comes from the same root, making the loss of joy echo the field’s gathering-in.
THE PATTERN
When the sources of shared abundance collapse, the public sounds of celebration fall silent.
And gladness will be gathered away, and joy from the fruitful field. In the vineyards there will be no singing, no shouting. The treaders will tread out no wine in the presses. I have made the shouting come to rest. The vine has withered, the fig tree wilts; pomegranate, date palm, and apple, all the trees of the field, have dried up; for the leaping has withered from the children of humankind. And the sound of those who pluck the harp, and of the makers of song, and of those who blow the pipe, and of those who sound the trumpet, shall be heard no more at all in you; and no hand of any craft shall be found in you any longer; and the sound of the grinding stone shall be heard no more at all in you;THE THREAD
And the feast of reaping, the first-ripened of your work, which you sow in the field. And the feast of gathering in, at the going out of the year, when you gather in your work from the field. The Hebrew word behind “taken” belongs to the אסף (asaph) family, which names harvest as “ingathering” here. Exodus shows that gathering as a feast of yield; Jeremiah turns the field’s gathering image toward absence, as joy is gathered out and the treaders’ shout dies.
