This verse in the King James

King James wording
A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.

The Hebrew ⁨חֶרֶב⁩ (ḥerev, sword) shares its root with ⁨חָרֵב⁩ (ḥārēv, desolate), so Babylon stands beneath a blade already carrying the word for its ruin.

The line lays the sword across a whole civic order: the people, its rulers, and its wise are all named. Rank and knowledge do not put anyone outside the reach of the violence it names.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that status or expertise can guarantee protection from violence reaching the whole community.

A sword is upon the hollow ones, and they shall rave. A sword is upon her mighty men, and they shall be shattered.
Jeremiah 50:36 · SDVThe sword falls on deceivers and mighty men alike, reaching beyond one rank of Babylon’s power.
For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, is turning aside from Jerusalem and from Judah the lean and the staff, the whole of bread, and the whole of waters. The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the one who divides by lots, and the elder. The captain of fifty, and the man whose face is lifted, and the counselor, and the wise carver, and the discerning whisperer.
Isaiah 3:1-3 · SDVThe removal reaches the supplies, leaders, counselors, and skilled workers that hold a society together.
And a strong messenger lifts a stone like a great millstone, and throws it into the sea, saying, With a rush shall Babylon the great city be thrown down, and shall never be found again.
Revelation 18:21 · SDVBabylon’s fall reaches the city itself, showing the collapse of the order whose people and powers Jeremiah names.
You who have escaped the sword, go, and do not stand still. Remember the LORD from afar, and let Jerusalem rise upon your heart.
Jeremiah 51:50 · SDV

Jeremiah 51:50 uses the same Hebrew word, ⁨חֶרֶב⁩ (ḥerev, sword), for the danger some escape. Its closing image points beyond Babylon’s devastation: Yerushalayim (⁨יְרוּשָׁלַיִם⁩, Jerusalem), the horizon of wholeness.
