King James wording
King James Version
And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but thou shalt be desolate for ever, saith the LORD.THE KEY
Babylon’s ruin is so complete that none of its stone can become the foundation of what comes next.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks now of a collapse whose materials cannot be carried forward as the corner or foundation of what follows. Its ruin is not a pause before rebuilding from the same center; it is named as desolation extending through the ages.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that whatever once stood at the center must remain the foundation of the future. Here, nothing from that ruined center is carried forward as a corner or base.
THE ROOT
אֶבֶן
ʾeven
GROWS FROM
א־ב־נ
ʾ-b-n
Stone; a piece of building material.
The sentence cuts off the stone’s future: none of it becomes a corner or base for what follows. A traditional sound-play hears אָב (ʾav, father) and בֵּן (ben, son) within אֶבֶן, an image of generations joined; this is a poetic echo, not a literal derivation, and here that generational material is denied a future foundation.
ALSO GROWS
ʾăvānîm: Stones.
אֲבָנִים
The plural makes clear that the verse excludes the city’s building stones as material for what comes next.
ʾeven pinnah: Cornerstone.
אֶבֶן פִּנָּה
This is the stone’s potential role at the corner, which the verse explicitly removes.
מוֹסָדוֹת
mōsādōṯ
GROWS FROM
י־ס־ד
y-s-d
To set, establish, or lay a foundation.
“foundations” in this verse is mōsādōṯ. The word carries the act of setting a base, not only the finished structure. Nothing from Babylon is set down as the load-bearing beginning of a future structure.
ALSO GROWS
yāsad: To establish or found.
יָסַד
It names the act of making something a basis, the very role Babylon’s stones are denied.
yesod: Foundation or basis.
יְסוֹד
It shows how the root’s action becomes the enduring base of a structure.
mōsād: Base or established structure.
מוֹסָד
The plural in the verse names what cannot be founded from the city’s remains.
שְׁמָמוֹת עוֹלָם
shemāmōṯ ʿōlām
GROWS FROM
ש־מ־ם
sh-m-m
To become devastated or laid waste.
“for the ages” in this verse is shemāmōṯ ʿōlām. The root describes devastation as a condition, not merely a vacant moment. The phrase continues with עוֹלָם (ʿōlām, an age or ages), stretching that desolation across the ages.
ALSO GROWS
shāmēm: Desolate or laid waste.
שָׁמֵם
It describes the state named for the city.
shemāmāh: Desolation or wasteland.
שְׁמָמָה
It gives the ruin a lasting shape: a place reduced to desolation.
THE PATTERN
A foundation shows whether what is built can endure: what rests on a sure base withstands collapse, while a ruined city loses even its stones from the future.
Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a weighty cornerstone, a foundation set firm. The one who leans his weight will not hurry. And the rain came down, and the rivers came, and the winds breathed and fell against that house, and it did not fall, for it had been laid on the rock. And a strong messenger lifts a stone like a great millstone, and throws it into the sea, saying, With a rush shall Babylon the great city be thrown down, and shall never be found again.THE THREAD
The stone the builders push away becomes the head of the corner. The Hebrew word אֶבֶן (ʾeven, stone) links this verse to Jeremiah’s stone that cannot serve as a corner or foundation. Here, a refused stone becomes the head of the corner: the same image turns from exclusion to a place at the center.
