This verse in the King James

King James wording
For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor, it is time to thresh her: yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.

Babylon becomes both the threshing floor beneath the treading and the one brought under it.

Babylon stands at the edge of her harvest: the verse pictures her as the floor under the treading and as the one being trodden. A little while separates this moment from the harvest arriving to her; the process has a limit.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that whatever serves as the ground of power lies beyond its reach. Here, Babylon becomes both the threshing floor and the one being threshed.

דָּרְכָהּ

dorkah

GROWS FROM

ד־ר־ך

d-r-k

to tread, step, or march

“tread” in this verse is dorkah. The Hebrew form behind “thresh” is built on the root for treading, placing feet and pressure at the center of the image. The same root gives ⁨דֶּרֶךְ⁩ (derekh, “way” or “path”): Babylon shifts from the surface underfoot to the one under pressure.

ALSO GROWS

dārakh: to tread, step, or march

דָּרַךְ

It makes the force of the threshing image physical: feet press upon the floor.

derekh: way, path, or course

דֶּרֶךְ

The same root links what is trodden to the way or course made by walking.

הַקָּצִיר

haqqatsir

GROWS FROM

ק־צ־ר

q-ts-r

to reap or cut down

The harvest word shares its root with the act of reaping: what has ripened is cut and gathered. Here the harvest is not distant; its time comes to Babylon, bringing the threshing image to its appointed result.

ALSO GROWS

qatsar: to reap or cut down

קָצַר

It names the action contained in the harvest: cutting what has ripened.

qotser: reaper; one who reaps

קוֹצֵר

It names the one who carries out the cutting that the harvest word implies.

Threshing and harvest make the hidden result of a season visible through separation and reaping.

Rise and thresh, daughter of Zion, for I will make your horn iron, and I will make your hooves bronze. You shall crush many peoples, and I will devote their gain to the LORD, and their portion to the Lord of all the earth.
Micah 4:13 · SDVDaughter Zion is pictured as the one who threshes, showing the force of the image from the other side.
Whose winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean his threshing floor, and gather the wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.
Matthew 3:12 · SDVThe floor, gathered wheat, and burned chaff make harvest a decisive separation.
Do not be led astray. God is not sneered at. For whatever a person sows, that also he reaps.
Galatians 6:7 · SDVThe sowing and reaping image makes harvest the visible outcome of what has been sown.
Stretch out the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the winepress is full. The vats overflow, for their evil is great.
Joel 3:13 · SDV

Joel uses the same ⁨קָצִיר⁩ (qatsir, “harvest”) and shows the moment as ripe for the sickle. Jeremiah places that moment just ahead for Babylon; Joel makes the cutting and pressing explicit, so the shared root frames harvest as what has come to term.
