King James wording
King James Version
And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.THE KEY
The verse repeats the verb “did” around two kings: a ruler’s evil can become an inherited pattern, but repetition does not hide it from the LORD’s sight.
THE MEANING
This verse names how a received act becomes a present pattern: Zedekiah’s doing echoes Jehoiakim’s. The LORD sees both the act and its resemblance to what came before; repetition leaves its character visible. The verse speaks now wherever a received pattern is being reenacted.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a harmful pattern becomes harmless once it is inherited or repeated. Repetition carries the pattern forward without erasing its character before the LORD.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעַשׂ
wayyaʿas
GROWS FROM
עשה
To do, make, or carry out.
The same root appears for what Zedekiah did and what Jehoiakim had done. That repeated verb makes their likeness concrete: one ruler’s actions become another’s pattern.
ALSO GROWS
maʿaseh: Deed, work, or act.
מַעֲשֶׂה
A deed is an action made visible, like the repeated actions named here.
ʿasiyyah: Action or doing.
עֲשִׂיָּה
The shared root keeps the focus on what each ruler actually does, not merely on resemblance in name or position.
הָרַע
ha-raʿ
GROWS FROM
רעע
To be bad or harmful; to bring trouble.
The word for evil belongs to a root family carrying the sense of badness and harm. The verse places that harm in the LORD’s sight, even as one ruler repeats what another has done.
ALSO GROWS
raʿ: Bad or evil.
רַע
This adjective names the quality of the action that the repeated verb carries forward.
raʿah: Evil, trouble, or calamity.
רָעָה
This related form shows how the root can name harm as well as characterize what is harmful.
יְהוֹיָקִים
Yehoyaqim
GROWS FROM
קום
To rise or stand; in a causative form, to raise or establish. The name means “YHWH raises” or “YHWH establishes.”
Jehoiakim’s name carries the sense of being raised or established by YHWH, while this verse names the actions he leaves as a pattern. The name points toward establishment; the sentence shows how actions, too, can establish a pattern for the next ruler.
ALSO GROWS
qum: Rise or stand.
קוּם
This is the basic sense beneath the name’s language of being raised.
heqim: Raise, set up, or establish.
הֵקִים
This causative form gives the name its sense of YHWH establishing or raising someone.
THE PATTERN
A way of acting becomes a pattern when it is copied; the pattern can be harmful or life-giving.
And he did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.Hard-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always fall against the Set-Apart Breath, as your fathers did, so also you.Become imitators of me, even as I also am of the Anointed One.THE THREAD
And the LORD saw that the harm of humankind was great in the earth, and that every shaping of the thoughts of his heart was only harm all the day.Genesis uses the same Hebrew word family for evil and places it in God’s sight. Together, the verses show evil as something seen and discerned, even when its pattern continues through human action.
