This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:

The one who takes them bears a slaughterer’s title, and among his captives are the people who watch the threshold.

The seizure reaches from the chief priest to the three people watching the threshold: the center of worship and its point of entry are both exposed. The one taking them bears an executioner’s title, holding authority and violence in the same frame.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A priestly title or guarded doorway does not place its holders beyond the reach of force; both are seized here.

רַב־טַבָּחִים

rav-tabbaḥim

GROWS FROM

טבח

To slaughter or butcher; in this title, the word carries the language of execution alongside command.

The KJV’s “captain of the guard” identifies his command; the Hebrew also carries the butcher and executioner word family. That added layer makes the force of the seizure audible in the title itself.

ALSO GROWS

tevaḥ: Slaughter; killing

טֶבַח

This noun makes the violent sense plain within the same word family as the captain’s title.

tabbaḥ: Butcher; cook

טַבָּח

This concrete word shows the work beneath the command title and keeps the language of slaughter close.

שֹׁמְרֵי הַסַּף

shomrei ha-saf

GROWS FROM

שׁמר

shamar

To guard, watch over, keep, or preserve.

“keepers of the door” in this verse is shomrei ha-saf. The root of “keepers” carries active watching and guarding, not just the name of a post. The verse shows the people entrusted with the threshold taken alongside the priests at the center.

ALSO GROWS

shomer: Keeper; watchman

שׁוֹמֵר

This singular form names the same active role carried by the threshold keepers.

mishmeret: Guard duty; charge

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

This branch makes guarding an entrusted responsibility, which clarifies what these keepers are taken from.

A place’s protection is entrusted to watchers, but the watch itself does not make them invulnerable.

And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.
Genesis 2:15 · SDVThe garden’s care includes a human being entrusted to keep it.
A Song of degrees for Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders toil in emptiness. Unless the LORD guards the city, the watchman stays awake in emptiness.
Psalm 127:1 · SDVThe city has a watchman, yet the verse names the limits of human watchfulness.
A Song of degrees for Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders toil in emptiness. Unless the LORD guards the city, the watchman stays awake in emptiness.
Psalm 127:1 · SDV

Jeremiah’s “keepers” and the Psalm’s “keep the city” both grow from ⁨שׁמר⁩ (shamar, guard, watch, keep). The Psalm names the limit around this verse: human watch is real, but it cannot guarantee a city’s safety.
