Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
I have set thee for a tower and a fortress among my people, that thou mayest know and try their way.

The Hebrew places a tester among the people and repeats that same root in “try,” joining the appointed role to the work of examining their way.

The verse places you among your people as a watchful presence, with the task of knowing and testing their direction. Their way is a track made by steps, so its course can be examined. The images of tower and fortress give this discernment a fixed place within the people.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that being among a people means their direction is beyond examination.

בָּחוֹן

bāḥōn

GROWS FROM

בחן

To test, examine, assay, or prove.

The KJV gives “tower” and “try,” but the Hebrew forms echo the same root of testing: bāḥōn names the one set among the people, and the verb names the work of examining their way. The tower’s watchful placement and the tester’s scrutiny meet in this repeated sound and root.

ALSO GROWS

bāḥōn: Tester or assayer; rendered “tower” here.

בָּחוֹן

This role-word links the one placed among the people with the work of examining them.

bāḥan: To test, examine, or prove.

בָּחַן

This is the root echoed in “try,” making the examination the action that grows from the appointed role.

דַּרְכָּם

darkām

GROWS FROM

דרך

To tread or step; by extension, a path or way.

“Way” carries the sense of a course made by walking. The verse’s examination concerns a direction shown through repeated steps, not an abstract idea detached from how people move.

ALSO GROWS

déreḵ: Way, road, or path.

דֶּרֶךְ

This is the path whose direction the verse says can be known and tested.

dāraḵ: To tread or step.

דָּרַךְ

The verb makes the “way” concrete: it is the ground made into a course by the steps taken upon it.

Examination reveals what a person’s way or heart already contains.

Examine me, O LORD, and test me; refine my kidneys and my heart.
Psalm 26:2 · SDVThe speaker asks to be examined, turning the testing of a person’s way toward the speaker’s own heart.
The smelting pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but the LORD probes the hearts.
Proverbs 17:3 · SDVThe refining image shows examination revealing what is already within the heart.
But just as we were tested by God and trusted with the good news, so we speak, not pleasing people but God, who tests our hearts.
1 Thessalonians 2:4 · SDVGod’s testing of hearts measures the truth beneath a person’s words and motives.
Examine me, O LORD, and test me; refine my kidneys and my heart.
Psalm 26:2 · SDV

“Examine” comes from ⁨בחן⁩, the same root repeated in Jeremiah’s “try.” Jeremiah places that testing among a people; Psalm 26 turns the same examination toward the speaker’s own inward life.
