King James wording
King James Version
For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.THE KEY
A fracture does not become whole because someone repeats the word for wholeness.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks to the moment when damage remains while quick reassurance covers it. Repeating “peace” does not make wholeness present; the distance between the declaration and the wound remains real. The verse names that distance instead of accepting the declaration.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a reassuring label can heal what it refuses to face.
THE ROOT
וַיְרַפְּאוּ
wayrappe'u
GROWS FROM
רפא
r-p-ʾ
to heal or restore health
“healed” in this verse is wayrappe'u. The root names healing, while “slightly” exposes how shallow the work is. The verse sets the claim of healing against a break that remains unrepaired.
ALSO GROWS
rofe: A person who heals
רֹפֵא
Jeremiah later asks why the daughter of the people is not recovered if a physician is there.
refu'ah: Healing or recovery
רְפוּאָה
The branch makes clear that the word points to actual restoration, not merely a claim that things are well.
שֶׁבֶר
shever
GROWS FROM
שבר
sh-b-r
to break; a fracture or breaking
“breaking” in this verse is shever. English “hurt” can sound like a passing injury; shever carries the sense of a break or fracture. Beside “healed,” it makes the gap between the wound and the promised repair visible.
ALSO GROWS
shavar: To break or shatter
שָׁבַר
The verb shows the break as an event that has happened, not a feeling erased by reassurance.
shavur: Broken
שָׁבוּר
This branch keeps the fracture in view beneath the spoken assurance of peace.
שָׁלוֹם
shalom
GROWS FROM
שלם
sh-l-m
to be whole or complete
“Wholeness, wholeness; no wholeness” in this verse is shalom. Shalom carries the sense of wholeness and intactness. The word is repeated, yet the verse says it is absent: the declaration insists on what the condition does not contain.
ALSO GROWS
shalem: Intact, whole
שָׁלֵם
It shows the condition the repeated word names but the passage says is missing.
shillem: To make a payment or restitution
שִׁלֵּם
This branch connects wholeness with what is made right or restored, rather than what is merely said.
THE PATTERN
Wholeness cannot be created by verbal reassurance while the underlying fracture remains.
They heal the breaking of the daughter of my people with a light hand, saying, Wholeness, wholeness, when there is no wholeness.Because, even because they have made my people wander, saying, Wholeness; and there was no wholeness; and one built up a wall, and, behold, others daubed it with tasteless plaster. When they say, "Wholeness and firm footing," then sudden ruin stands over them, like labor pains upon a woman carrying a child in her womb, and they will not escape.THE THREAD
Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no healer there? Why then has new flesh not risen over the daughter of my people?“Physician” here is רֹפֵא (rofe, healer), from the same root רפא (r-p-ʾ, heal) as “healed” in verse 11. The question sharpens the test: if healing is real, why does the daughter of the people remain unrecovered?
