King James wording
King James Version
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.THE KEY
Escape does not end the catastrophe here; it leaves one person alive to carry its report.
THE MEANING
One report is still being spoken when another loss arrives, before the first can be absorbed. The one who survives is not shown as untouched: he remains alive to tell what the fire has consumed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Surviving does not mean the danger is over or the witness is free of what happened; here, escape leaves him carrying the news.
THE ROOT
וָאִמָּלְטָה
vaʾimmālṭāh
GROWS FROM
מלט
To slip free or escape.
“slipped away” in this verse is vaʾimmālṭāh. This word names getting free of a force, not restoring what that force has destroyed. The messenger survives as a witness, so escape here means passage through catastrophe, not its repair.
ALSO GROWS
nimlaṭ: Escape, slip away.
נִמְלַט
This related form makes clear that the word describes getting out of danger; it does not say the danger has been undone.
miflāṭ: Refuge, escape.
מִפְלָט
The related noun for refuge grows from the same root: a refuge is where someone can get clear of what threatens them.
וַתֹּאכְלֵם
wattōʾkhlēm
GROWS FROM
אכל
To eat or consume.
“devoured them” in this verse is wattōʾkhlēm. The Hebrew says the fire ate the flock and the servants. That image makes the destruction feel engulfing, while the next clause leaves a single speaker outside its reach long enough to tell of it.
ALSO GROWS
ʾākal: Eat.
אָכַל
This is the verb’s basic form, revealing the concrete image beneath the KJV’s “consumed.”
ʾōḵel: Food, foodstuff.
אֹכֶל
The related noun for food carries the eating image back into view: the fire acts as though it devours what it reaches.
THE PATTERN
A devastating report can be overtaken by another before the first has finished being spoken.
While he was still speaking, another came also, and said, The Chaldeans set three heads, and swept over the camels and took them, and struck down the servants by the mouth of the sword, and I alone have slipped away to tell you. While he was still speaking, another came also, and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn brother. While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the ruler of the gathering, saying to him, Your daughter has died. Do not trouble the teacher.THE THREAD
And it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, Escape for your living soul. Do not look behind you, and do not stand still anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountain, lest you be swept away.Job’s “escaped” and Genesis’s command “Escape” come from the Hebrew root מלט (mālaṭ), meaning to slip free or escape. Genesis uses it for getting clear of a place facing destruction; Job uses it for the one left alive after destruction, so the shared root opens escape as passage through danger, not restoration.
