King James wording
King James Version
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:THE KEY
The Hebrew says, “this one speaking, and this one came,” putting the next voice inside the previous one’s unfinished sentence.
THE MEANING
You are placed inside the moment when one report is still being spoken and another arrives. The children are eating and drinking wine together in their eldest brother’s house, an ordinary scene now held beside the next voice’s news. The interruption itself carries the shock before the next line names what happens.
THE ROOT
מְדַבֵּר
mədabbēr
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
to speak, utter
The Hebrew pairs זֶה וְזֶה (zeh ve-zeh, “this one and this one”): while one is speaking, another arrives. The same root gives דָּבָר (dāḇār), “word” or “matter,” so speech here is the channel through which the next matter enters the room.
ALSO GROWS
dāḇār: word, matter, or thing
דָּבָר
The root joins speaking with the matter spoken of; here, words bring another family scene into Job’s awareness.
dibber: spoke, uttered
דִּבֵּר
This verb form shows the root in action: the first messenger’s speech is still underway when the next messenger arrives.
THE PATTERN
The next report arrives before the present one is finished, collapsing the pause between one shock and the next.
While he was still speaking, another came also, and said, The Chaldeans set three heads, and swept over the camels and took them, and struck down the servants by the mouth of the sword, and I alone have slipped away to tell you. While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the ruler of the gathering, saying to him, Your daughter has died. Do not trouble the teacher.THE THREAD
While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the ruler of the gathering, saying to him, Your daughter has died. Do not trouble the teacher.Luke repeats the same hinge: one person is still speaking when another arrives with a report. The interruption is part of the weight in both scenes, bringing the next words before the first speaker can finish.
