This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

The Adversary’s range across the earth does not make the earth his; the verse places his roaming under the LORD’s question.

Opposition moves through the world you inhabit, yet its movement is spoken aloud before the LORD. The verse makes its route visible: the roaming is named in response to a question.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that opposition’s reach makes it sovereign: the one who ranges across the earth is still questioned about where he has been.

שׁוּט

shut

GROWS FROM

שׁוט

to roam, range through, move to and fro

“roaming over” in this verse is shut. The phrase describes sustained movement across the land, not a single arrival. The same root describes the LORD’s eyes ranging through the whole earth in 2 Chronicles 16:9, so the motion alone does not disclose the nature of the one who moves; what that presence seeks matters too.

ALSO GROWS

shut: to range or go to and fro

שׁוּט

This is the movement named in the verse: the Adversary traverses the earth.

meshoteṭot: ranging, roaming

מְשׁוֹטְטוֹת

In 2 Chronicles 16:9, this form describes the LORD’s eyes ranging through the earth, opening the same image to more than one purpose.

הַשָּׂטָן

ha-satan

GROWS FROM

שׂטן

to oppose, act as an adversary

“Satan” in this verse is ha-satan. The Hebrew article makes this “the Adversary”: the title names a role of opposition. The name carries the nature of resistance, rather than functioning as a label detached from what the figure does.

ALSO GROWS

satan: an adversary, an opponent

שָׂטָן

The noun names opposition as a presence, which is the role given here.

sitnah: hostility, accusation

שִׂטְנָה

This related word shows opposition taking the form of hostile accusation, extending the nature carried by the title.

Movement across the earth reveals a presence through where it goes and what it seeks.

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout all the earth, to take firm hold with those whose heart is whole toward him. In this you have acted foolishly, therefore from now on you will have wars.
2 Chronicles 16:9 · SDVThe LORD’s eyes range across the earth, and their movement is directed toward strengthening those whose hearts are whole toward him.
And they shall stagger from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and they shall not find it.
Amos 8:12 · SDVThe roaming becomes a search for the LORD’s word, and the verse names what the movement seeks.
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout all the earth, to take firm hold with those whose heart is whole toward him. In this you have acted foolishly, therefore from now on you will have wars.
2 Chronicles 16:9 · SDV

Job uses ⁨שׁוּט⁩ (shut, “to roam”) for the Adversary’s movement; Chronicles uses the same root for the LORD’s eyes ranging across the whole earth. The shared motion opens the image: roaming alone does not define the one who moves; the nature and purpose of the presence do.
