This verse in the King James

King James wording
For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

What bribery builds for shelter becomes the very thing the fire consumes.

A gathering can look intact while its shared life is barren when profanation becomes its center. Bribery offers shelter through a crooked exchange, but that shelter carries the force of its own undoing.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that a corrupt exchange can secure a community’s future by protecting the people gathered around it.

חָנֵף

ḥānēp̄

GROWS FROM

חנף

ḥ-n-p̄

To be profane or defiled; to pollute what should be set apart.

“the soiled” in this verse is ḥānēp̄. The word translated “hypocrites” carries the deeper sense of profanation, not merely pretending to be something one is not. The verse names a shared life whose center has been polluted, leaving its gathering barren.

ALSO GROWS

ḥānap̄: To profane or defile; in Isaiah 24:5, the earth is described as defiled.

חָנַף

This branch shows that the condition reaches beyond a person’s outward behavior and can stain the whole ground of communal life.

ḥănuppāh: Profaneness or pollution; in Jeremiah 23:15, profaneness goes forth into the land.

חֲנֻפָּה

The same root names both the profaned condition and its spread, illuminating why the congregation itself is left barren.

שֹׁחַד

shōḥaḏ

GROWS FROM

שחד

sh-ḥ-d

A bribe or gift given to sway judgment; the root also means to bribe.

The Hebrew noun can be rendered “reward” in one setting and “bribe” in another, but the word itself keeps the connection between a gift and its power to influence. Here the exchange is exposed as the crooked foundation beneath the shelter.

ALSO GROWS

shāḥaḏ: To bribe.

שָׁחַד

The verb names the action behind the noun: the exchange is intended to bend judgment.

shōḥaḏ: A gift, reward, or bribe; translated “reward” in Deuteronomy 10:17.

שֹׁחַד

The range keeps the apparently valuable gift connected to bribery, revealing how an exchange can carry corruption within it.

אָכְלָה

ʾāḵəlâ

GROWS FROM

אכל

ʾ-k-l

To eat, consume, or devour.

The Hebrew verb for the fire’s action is the ordinary word for eating. The image is not only of a blow from outside: the fire devours the shelter until nothing remains to hold the gathered people.

ALSO GROWS

ʾākal: To eat, consume, or devour.

אָכַל

This verbal root makes the fire’s destruction concrete: the tents become what it eats.

maʾăḵāl: Food or something eaten.

מַאֲכָל

This noun from the same root sharpens the image of the tents as food for the consuming fire.

Corrupt gain turns the shelter and advantage it promises into the source of a community’s unraveling.

The one who cuts for gain troubles his own house, but the one who hates gifts lives.
Proverbs 15:27 · SDVGain that seems to secure a household instead brings trouble into its own shelter.
Your princes are stiff-shouldered, and joined to thieves. Each one loves the bribe, and pursues rewards. They do not judge the fatherless, and the widow's contention does not come to them.
Isaiah 1:23 · SDVThe pursuit of gifts and rewards corrodes public judgment and leaves the vulnerable without justice.
Your gold and your silver have rusted, and their rust will be a witness against you, and will devour your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.
James 5:3 · SDVTreasure amassed as security becomes a witness against its owners and is pictured as fire consuming them.
He who walks in alignment and speaks straight, who refuses the gain of pressing, who shakes his palms loose from holding bribes, who stops his ears from hearing blood, and who shuts his eyes from seeing evil.
Isaiah 33:15 · SDV

Isaiah uses the same Hebrew word, ⁨שֹׁחַד⁩ (shōḥaḏ, a bribe or gift used to sway judgment), for what Job calls bribery. Job shows the shelter of that exchange being consumed; Isaiah pictures the upright person releasing the bribe from their hands.
