King James wording
King James Version
Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;THE KEY
The trap closes from two directions at once: snares surround you, while sudden alarm disorients you from within.
THE MEANING
This line names the experience of feeling enclosed by threats while fear arrives all at once and unsettles you. The danger crowds from around; the alarm moves through you before you can steady your response.
THE ROOT
וִיבַהֶלְךָ
waybahalkha
GROWS FROM
בהל
To be dismayed or hurried; in this verb form, to alarm or terrify someone.
“startles” in this verse is waybahalkha. The verb rendered “troubleth” is וִיבַהֶלְךָ (waybahalkha, and it alarms you), from בהל (bahal), a root of dismay and haste. Its branches describe people being dismayed and a person hurrying, so the fear here does more than hurt: it agitates and accelerates the one it catches.
ALSO GROWS
nivhalu: Were dismayed or alarmed.
נִבְהֲלוּ
This same root describes Joseph’s brothers as so startled they cannot answer, showing fear disrupting speech.
nivhal: Hurries or rushes.
נִבְהָל
The root also carries haste, showing how alarm can speed a person into response.
THE PATTERN
When a threat overwhelms the moment, fear appears as something that seizes perception and unsettles response.
Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph. Is my father yet living? And his brothers could not answer him, for they were startled before his face. The one who hastens to be rich has an evil eye, and does not perceive that lack shall come upon him.People breathing out their living souls from fear in their hearts, and from watching for what is coming upon the inhabited earth, for the strength of the heavens will be shaken.THE THREAD
Fear met me, and trembling, which made all my bones come apart. Both verses use פחד (pachad, fear or dread). Job 4:14 pairs that fear with trembling through the bones; here it arrives suddenly while snares press in from every side.
