King James wording
King James Version
Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.THE KEY
The verse doubles concealment: darkness takes sight away, then water covers the person who cannot see.
THE MEANING
Darkness blocks your sight while abundant waters cover you, so danger arrives together with disorientation. The image speaks from inside engulfment, where the force covering you also takes away your view.
THE ROOT
תְּכַסֶּךָּ
tekhasseka
GROWS FROM
כסה
The Hebrew root כסה (kasah) means to cover or conceal from sight.
“covers” in this verse is tekhasseka. The verb is addressed to a person: the waters do not merely surround you; they cover you, obscuring what sight could use for orientation. The Hebrew keeps concealment inside the image of engulfment.
ALSO GROWS
kasah: to cover, conceal
כָּסָה
This base form names the root action; Job’s inflected form makes the covering immediate by directing it onto you.
nikhsah: to be covered, become hidden
נִכְסָה
This form describes the state produced when something covers a person or thing, bringing out the loss of visibility in Job’s image.
hitkassah: to cover oneself, be covered
הִתְכַּסָּה
This reflexive form shows the same root turning toward the one under the covering; here the waters impose that condition.
THE PATTERN
Flood imagery depicts peril as encroachment that removes ordinary ground and sight.
And the waters grew mightier and mightier upon the earth, and all the high mountains that were under all the heavens were covered.I sink in the mire of waters, where there is no footing. I come into the depths of waters, and the flood sweeps over me.And behold, a great shaking arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered by the waves; but he himself was sleeping.THE THREAD
And the waters grew mightier and mightier upon the earth, and all the high mountains that were under all the heavens were covered.Job’s waters cover a person; Genesis’s waters cover the highest hills. The same Hebrew root כסה (kasah), “cover,” scales the image from personal engulfment to a submerged world.
