King James wording
King James Version
Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.THE KEY
Being heard is not the finish of prayer: the vow is brought to completion too.
THE MEANING
Your prayer is heard, and the words you have pledged do not remain suspended; they move toward completion. The verse holds receiving and fulfilling together: the heard request is joined to making good on your vows.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being heard completes the whole exchange while your pledged words remain unfinished.
THE ROOT
תְּשַׁלֵּם
teshallēm
GROWS FROM
שׁלם
sh-l-m
Be whole or complete; make good, repay.
“make your vows whole” in this verse is teshallēm. The verb translated “pay” shares its root with shalom, wholeness. Paying a vow carries more than settling a debt: the pledged word is brought to completion, closing the gap between what is said and what is done.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, completeness
שָׁלוֹם
The shared root lets the vow’s completion echo the wider idea of wholeness.
shelem: A well-being or peace offering
שֶׁלֶם
This branch also carries the root’s sense of completion, linking a vow fulfilled with an offering brought to God.
THE PATTERN
Prayer is received, and pledged words are carried through to completion.
But surely God hears and responds; he bends his ear to the voice of my prayer. When you vow a vow to God, do not linger to make it whole. For there is no delight in the thick-headed. Make whole what you have vowed. And this is the open speech we hold toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.THE THREAD
Offer to God thanksgiving, and make whole your vows to the Most High.Job 22:27 and Psalm 50:14 use the שׁלם root family for paying vows. That shared root lets “pay” carry the sense of making complete: a vow is a word brought through to completion.
