King James wording
King James Version
He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.THE KEY
The verse makes deliverance both something one person brings about and something another receives through the cleanness of that person’s hands.
THE MEANING
Deliverance reaches one person through the clean hands of another. The Hebrew phrase rendered “the island of the innocent” is also read by many translators as “even one who is not innocent,” allowing the verse to speak of deliverance reaching beyond the recipient’s own innocence.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Only an innocent person can be reached by deliverance.
THE ROOT
יְמַלֵּט
yĕmallēṭ
GROWS FROM
מלט
To escape or slip away; in this form, to bring someone through danger.
The verse uses this root first for the one who delivers and then for the one who is delivered. One Hebrew seed holds both sides of the movement: bringing another through, and being brought through.
ALSO GROWS
nimlaṭ: is delivered; escapes
נִמְלַט
This form appears in the verse’s second clause, placing the recipient’s escape beside the deliverer’s action.
himmālēṭ: escape!
הִמָּלֵט
Genesis 19:17 uses this form as an urgent command to get out of danger, making the root’s movement concrete.
נָקִי
nāqî
GROWS FROM
נקה
To be clean or cleared of guilt.
The word translated “innocent” belongs to a family of cleanness and being cleared. That gives the phrase room for the alternate reading “not innocent,” where deliverance reaches someone whose own standing is not clean.
ALSO GROWS
nāqî: clean; innocent
נָקִי
This is the word rendered “innocent” in the KJV phrase, while its alternate reading makes the recipient’s guilt part of the verse’s tension.
yĕnaqqeh: will clear; will hold guiltless
יְנַקֶּה
The same root can describe being cleared of guilt, linking innocence with release from a charge.
בֹּר
bōr
GROWS FROM
ברר
To make clear or pure; to refine.
“cleanness” in this verse is bōr. This word for purity belongs to a family of clearing and refining. The verse places that quality in the hands of the person through whom another is delivered.
ALSO GROWS
bārar: to purify; to clarify
בָּרַר
The verb shows purity as a clearing process, illuminating the hands as clear of what would obstruct deliverance.
yitbārerū: they will be purified
יִתְבָּרֲרוּ
This form in Daniel 11:35 carries the same refining root, echoing the cleanness named here.
THE PATTERN
One person’s clean standing can become a means of sparing or restoring others.
And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty aligned ones in the midst of the city, then I will lift all the place for their sake.So now take seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a rising offering. Then my servant Job shall pray for you, and I will lift up his face, so that I do not deal with you according to your folly, since you have not spoken to me the steady thing, as my servant Job has.Speak your stumbles into the open to one another, and pray over one another, that you may be made whole. The asking of an aligned one, working within, is very strong.THE THREAD
And it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, Escape for your living soul. Do not look behind you, and do not stand still anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountain, lest you be swept away. The command “Escape” uses the same Hebrew root מלט (malat, to escape or bring through danger) as both forms of “deliver” in Job 22:30. Genesis makes vivid the movement Job holds between the one who brings another through and the one who escapes.
