King James wording
King James Version
How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?THE KEY
A flood of explanation cannot prove wisdom; the question is whether it makes sound wisdom known.
THE MEANING
When you are treated as though you have no wisdom, this verse asks whether advice actually brings insight or merely performs superiority through explanation. Speech must make sound wisdom known; its volume alone does not establish that it does. The question leaves the speaker’s wisdom open to the same test as the listener’s.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A confident, elaborate explanation proves that the speaker is wise and the listener is deficient.
THE ROOT
יָעַצְתָּ
yaʿatsta
GROWS FROM
י־ע־ץ
y-ʿ-ṣ
To advise, deliberate, or give counsel.
“counseled” in this verse is yaʿatsta. The same seed appears in the act of advising, the counsel itself, and the adviser. Job’s question presses beyond the presence of advice to whether it carries wisdom.
ALSO GROWS
ʿetsah: Counsel, advice, or a plan.
עֵצָה
This is the counsel that the act of advising produces; the verse asks what substance it offers.
yoʿets: Counselor or adviser.
יוֹעֵץ
The root names both the advice and the person giving it, putting the speaker’s judgment under the same scrutiny as the counsel.
הוֹדַעְתָּ
hodaʿta
GROWS FROM
י־ד־ע
y-d-ʿ
To know or perceive by encounter.
“made known” in this verse is hodaʿta. הוֹדַעְתָּ is the causative form of יָדַע: to make known. The question tests what the explanation actually enables someone to perceive, rather than how much is said.
ALSO GROWS
yada: To know or perceive.
יָדַע
The verb beneath “declared” ties speech to what becomes known.
daʿat: Knowledge or perception.
דַּעַת
This related noun points to the understanding the declaration claims to convey.
חָכְמָה
chokhmah
GROWS FROM
ח־כ־ם
ḥ-k-m
To be wise, and also to act skillfully.
The root links wisdom with demonstrated skill, not merely with having information. In a verse about counsel, it makes the measure of wisdom the quality of judgment the words show.
ALSO GROWS
ḥakham: A wise person or one who acts skillfully.
חָכָם
Wisdom is present as a capacity expressed in action, which is what counsel puts on display.
ḥakham-lev: Wise of heart; skilled or discerning.
חֲכַם־לֵב
This phrase is used for skilled artisans, showing wisdom as capable, discerning work rather than abstract talk.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom shows itself in what speech makes known and bears, not in how much it says.
The lips of the wise scatter knowledge, but the heart of fools does not do so.But the wisdom that is from above is first set apart, then whole, gentle, and easy to yield to, full of faithful love and good fruits, undivided, and without a mask.Without counsel, plans are broken, but in a multitude of counselors they stand.THE THREAD
Without counsel, plans are broken, but in a multitude of counselors they stand.“Counsel” and “counsellors” grow from the same Hebrew root as “counselled” here. Proverbs shows counsel helping plans stand; Job’s question sharpens the test: does the advice carry wisdom, or is it only abundant?
