This verse in the King James

King James wording
He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.

Discovery is an emergence: what is hidden comes out into light as the flood is held in check.

The same human reach that can contain a torrent can bring concealed matter into view; discovery is uncovering, not adding. But seeing what is buried does not itself answer where wisdom is found.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that whatever is brought into view has therefore been understood dissolves here: visible treasure and wisdom are not the same discovery.

יֹצִא

yotsi

GROWS FROM

יצא

y-ṣ-ʾ

Go out, emerge; in this form, cause to go out or bring out.

“brings out” in this verse is yotsi. The Hebrew verb pictures the hidden matter being caused to emerge. What appears in the light is uncovered, not newly made.

ALSO GROWS

yatsa: Go out, emerge.

יָצָא

The basic sense makes the hidden thing’s movement into view part of the verse’s meaning.

hotzi: Bring out, cause to go out.

הוֹצִיא

This causative branch makes clear that bringing something forth is making it emerge from where it was concealed.

תַּעֲלֻמָה

taʿalumah

GROWS FROM

עלם

ʿ-l-m

Hide, conceal.

“hid” in this verse is taʿalumah. ⁨תַּעֲלֻמָה⁩ means a concealed matter or secret, not merely an object that has gone missing. The same root can describe what is kept from sight, connecting the verse’s hidden matter with the deeper idea of concealment.

ALSO GROWS

heʿelim: Hide, conceal.

הֶעְלִים

This verb names the act that leaves something beyond view.

neʿlam: Hidden, concealed.

נֶעְלָם

This form is used for a concealed thing in Ecclesiastes 12:14, where what is hidden is brought into judgment.

חִבֵּשׁ

ḥibbeš

GROWS FROM

חבש

ḥ-b-š

Bind, wrap, secure.

“bindeth” in this verse is ḥibbeš. The first action is restraint: the waters are bound so they do not overflow. This root can also describe binding up a wound or securing a saddle, carrying the sense of holding something in place rather than destroying it.

ALSO GROWS

laḥavosh: To bind up, bandage.

לַחֲבֹשׁ

Binding can hold what is exposed or spilling in place, clarifying the verse’s image of restraint.

vayyaḥavosh: And he saddled, secured gear on an animal.

וַיַּחֲבֹשׁ

This branch also uses binding to secure and control movement.

What is hidden can emerge through searching and disclosure, while visibility does not by itself equal wisdom.

If you seek her as silver, and dig for her as for hidden treasure.
Proverbs 2:4 · SDVWisdom is sought like silver and hidden treasure, echoing Job’s mining image while distinguishing the prize sought from the material brought to light.
For nothing is hidden that will not be made visible, nor anything concealed that will not be known and come into the light.
Luke 8:17 · SDVThe verse declares that concealed things do not remain beyond disclosure; what is hidden comes into view.
For God brings every making into judgment, upon every hidden thing, whether good or harm.
Ecclesiastes 12:14 · SDV

The Hebrew for “secret thing” is ⁨נֶעְלָם⁩ (neʿlam, something concealed), from the same root ⁨עלם⁩ (ʿ-l-m) as Job’s ⁨תַּעֲלֻמָה⁩ (taʿalumah, hidden matter). Job shows hidden matter emerging into light; Ecclesiastes extends that uncovering to every concealed work.
