This verse in the King James

King James wording
But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?

The hands that uncover what is hidden in the earth still cannot locate the source of wisdom.

Your ability to uncover hidden things does not make wisdom an object you can excavate. The verse holds wisdom as something to be found and understanding as discernment whose place is still being asked for.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that uncovering more information automatically gives you wisdom.

חָכְמָה

ḥokhmāh

GROWS FROM

חכם

ḥ-k-m

To be wise or skillful; wisdom expressed as practiced competence.

Wisdom grows from the language of skill and practiced competence. In the scene of miners uncovering the earth, that shared root sharpens the question: technical mastery can expose hidden ore, yet the location of wisdom remains unanswered.

ALSO GROWS

ḥākam: To become wise or act skillfully.

חָכַם

This verb shows wisdom as a capacity expressed through action, deepening the question of where that capacity comes from.

ḥākām: A wise or skillful person.

חָכָם

This related form names the person who embodies the same wisdom the verse asks where to find.

בִּינָה

bīnāh

GROWS FROM

בין

b-y-n

To discern, distinguish, or understand.

The same consonants carry both discernment and the relation “between.” Understanding has the texture of noticing distinctions and seeing how things relate; the verse asks where that capacity has its place.

ALSO GROWS

bīn: To discern or understand.

בִּין

This verb carries the root’s central act of perceiving distinctions, the capacity named in the verse.

bēn: Between.

בֵּין

This related form echoes discernment as noticing what lies between or distinguishes one thing from another.

What human skill cannot locate is known by God and given to those who ask.

God discerns its way, and he perceives its place.
Job 28:23 · SDVThe search for wisdom’s place meets the statement that God knows both its way and its place.
For the LORD gives wisdom; out of his mouth come knowledge and discernment.
Proverbs 2:6 · SDVWisdom and understanding come from the LORD, the source the search in Job is reaching toward.
But if any of you is left behind in wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all without doubling and without taunting, and it will be given him.
James 1:5 · SDVThe verse presents wisdom as something God gives when it is asked for.
And he says to humankind, "Look, awe of the LORD is wisdom, and to turn aside from evil is understanding."
Job 28:28 · SDV

The chapter answers its own question using the same Hebrew words for wisdom and understanding, now joined to awe of the LORD and departure from evil. The search for a hidden location opens into a revealed shape of life.
