This verse in the King James

King James wording
The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.

Wisdom cannot be weighed against treasure because it does not belong to the market’s system of equal value and exchange.

Wisdom is beyond the reader’s scale of possession: gold and crystal cannot match it, and fine gold cannot take its place. The verse exposes two limits of wealth at once, comparison and substitution.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that anything precious enough can equal or replace wisdom.

יַעַרְכֶנָּה

yaʿarkhennāh

GROWS FROM

ערך

To arrange, set in order, or assess by comparison.

“set beside it” in this verse is yaʿarkhennāh. The verb can mean to arrange or set in order, and by extension to estimate or compare. Gold cannot even be set beside wisdom on a shared scale.

ALSO GROWS

ʿārakh: Arrange, set in order

עָרַךְ

The comparison begins as an act of placing things alongside one another.

ʿērekh: Value, assessment

עֵרֶךְ

This noun carries the root into valuation, exposing the price-setting image beneath “equal.”

maʿărākāh: Array, ordered formation

מַעֲרָכָה

An array is a set of things arranged in relation; Job refuses gold a place in wisdom’s order.

תְּמוּרָתָהּ

temuratah

GROWS FROM

מור

To exchange, substitute, or change one thing for another.

“traded” in this verse is temuratah. The verse also closes off replacement: fine gold cannot stand in wisdom’s place. Wealth fails both as a measure and as a substitute.

ALSO GROWS

temurah: Exchange, substitution

תְּמוּרָה

This noun is the verse’s explicit image of replacing one thing with another.

hēmîr: Exchange, change, replace

הֵמִיר

The verb appears in the instruction not to exchange one animal for another (Leviticus 27:10), showing substitution as the same root’s action.

Wisdom exceeds material valuation: possessions cannot equal it or buy its place.

For Wisdom is better than rubies, and all that you delight in cannot be set level with her.
Proverbs 8:11 · SDVWisdom is not merely more precious than a jewel; the verse says desired possessions cannot be compared with it.
How good is the buying of wisdom, more than gold, and of discernment, chosen over silver.
Proverbs 16:16 · SDVGold and silver yield to wisdom and understanding as measures of what is truly worth having.
But if any of you is left behind in wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all without doubling and without taunting, and it will be given him.
James 1:5 · SDVWisdom comes as a gift to the one who asks, outside the logic of buying and selling.
For who in the skies can be set in line with the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty can be matched to the LORD?
Psalm 89:6 · SDV

The Hebrew word rendered “compared” shares the root ⁨ערך⁩ with Job’s “equal”, to arrange or set in order. Job says gold cannot be placed beside wisdom; the psalm uses the same root to ask who can be placed beside the LORD.
