This verse in the King James

King James wording
The lion’s whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.

The way to wisdom is not a trail even the lion’s strength can tread.

The path to wisdom remains beyond the lion’s reach: neither its young nor the fierce lion has passed along it. Predatory strength does not reveal this way; its power has limits even in the created world.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that enough strength can force its way to wisdom dissolves here: even the lion has not walked this path.

הִדְרִיכוּהוּ

hidrikhuhu

GROWS FROM

דרך

To tread, step, or walk along.

English separates “trodden” from “way,” but Hebrew links them through the same root: a way is a route walked by steps. The lions’ failure to tread it shows that wisdom’s path is beyond their strength.

ALSO GROWS

derek: A way, road, or path.

דֶּרֶךְ

This noun shares the root of “trodden,” joining the route to the act of walking it.

darakh: To tread or step; the verb underlying “trodden.”

דָּרַךְ

The verse uses this root for the lions’ movement, making their absence from wisdom’s way concrete.

Creaturely strength and understanding cannot claim the way of wisdom as their own.

With him is wisdom and strength; counsel and understanding are his.
Job 12:13 · SDVWisdom and understanding are located with God, beyond what creaturely strength can claim.
For my plans are not your plans, nor are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
Isaiah 55:8 · SDVThe verse places God’s ways beyond human reach, echoing the lion’s inability to tread wisdom’s path.
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than humankind, and the weakness of God is stronger than humankind.
1 Corinthians 1:25 · SDVEven the limits of human wisdom and strength cannot measure what belongs to God.
God discerns its way, and he perceives its place.
Job 28:23 · SDV

The same Hebrew root underlies “trodden” here and “way” in the next verse: the lions do not traverse it, but God knows its course and place. What strength cannot find is fully known to God.
