King James wording
King James Version
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;THE KEY
The word “preserved” is the language of a watchful guard, so the longing is for God’s attentive keeping, not simply for better days.
THE MEANING
This longing is not vague nostalgia: it remembers what it feels like to live under God’s watch. The ache names a real difference between then and now without declaring that care has vanished in the present. The desire for that attentive keeping speaks plainly.
THE ROOT
שָׁמַר
shāmar
GROWS FROM
שמר
To keep watch over, guard, or preserve.
“kept watch over” in this verse is shāmar. The KJV’s “preserved” comes from שָׁמַר (shāmar, to guard or keep watch): the word gathers protection and attention into one act. The longing, then, is for the felt closeness of being watched over, not merely for a former stretch of time.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: One who guards or watches.
שֹׁמֵר
The remembered God is pictured with the attentive posture of a keeper, not as an abstract force.
mishmeret: A guard post, charge, or period of watch.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
The word can name the entrusted watch as well as guarding itself; preservation carries continuing attention.
THE PATTERN
Divine keeping is pictured as active watch over a person’s life and movement.
And behold, I am with you, and I will guard you in every place you go, and I will bring you back into this land; for I will not leave you until I have done the word I have spoken to you.The LORD watches over you from all harm; he watches over your living soul.I do not ask that you lift them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil.THE THREAD
The LORD watches over your going out and your coming in, from now and to the ages.“Preserve” here comes from the same Hebrew root, שָׁמַר (shāmar, to guard or keep watch). Job’s remembered keeping opens into the ordinary thresholds of life: going out and coming in are also within that watch.
