King James wording
King James Version
When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;THE KEY
The light does not need to erase the darkness for you to walk through it.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks now of light over your head becoming the means by which you move: by its light, you walk through darkness. The darkness remains present, but it does not cancel the possibility of a next step.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that darkness must disappear before you can move; here, light is present within the darkness.
THE ROOT
חֹשֶׁךְ
ḥōšeḵ
GROWS FROM
חשך
ḥ-š-kh
To be dark; the same consonants also appear in a verb meaning to withhold or hold back.
The root links darkness with withholding, so the word can carry more than an absence of sight: it also suggests restraint. Yet the verse says the speaker still walks through it.
ALSO GROWS
ḥōšeḵ: darkness
חֹשֶׁךְ
This is the verse’s word for darkness, the obscuring state the speaker moves through.
ḥāśaḵ: withhold, hold back, spare
חָשַׂךְ
The shared consonants connect darkness with what is held back or obstructed, while the verse’s movement continues.
אוֹר
’or
GROWS FROM
אור
’-w-r
Light; to be luminous or shine.
The phrase לְאוֹרוֹ (le’oro, by his light) makes illumination the medium of the walk. The light is present as the darkness remains, giving movement a way through it.
ALSO GROWS
he’īr: to give light, illuminate
הֵאִיר
This verb from the same root shows light as something that makes a way visible.
ma’or: luminary, light-bearing body
מָאוֹר
This branch names a bearer of light, echoing the lamp that shines over the speaker’s head.
אֵלֵךְ
’ēlēḵ
GROWS FROM
הלך
h-l-kh
To go, walk, or move along.
“walked” in this verse is ’ēlēḵ. The line keeps the response bodily and in motion: light is not only seen but accompanies walking. Darkness is crossed, rather than treated as a place where movement must stop.
ALSO GROWS
hālaḵ: to go, walk
הָלַךְ
This is the basic verb for walking that underlies the verse’s movement.
hithallēḵ: to walk about, move through
הִתְהַלֵּךְ
This form emphasizes continuing movement, fitting the speaker’s passage through darkness.
THE PATTERN
Light gives a way to move through darkness while the darkness is still present.
Even though I walk through the valley of deepest darkness, I do not fear harm, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not take hold of it.Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.THE THREAD
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path. Both verses use אוֹר (’or, light): Job speaks of walking by that light, and the psalm places it on the path and at the feet. The shared root makes explicit how illumination becomes guidance for movement.
