This verse in the King James

King James wording
Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

“Prevent” means the knees came before and met him, Job is asking why he was received and nourished before he could choose life.

This lament gives voice to the ache of existing: you arrive through bodies that receive and feed you before you can consent to life or its pain. The question does not resolve that ache; it lets the question stand with its full weight.

קִדְּמוּנִי

qiddemuni

GROWS FROM

קדם

q-d-m

To come before, precede, or meet in advance.

“come before” in this verse is qiddemuni. The Hebrew says the knees came before him; the KJV’s “prevent” preserves an older sense of meeting or arriving first. Job’s question is about being met at the threshold of life, then sustained by milk.

ALSO GROWS

qadam: To come before or meet.

קָדַם

This is the verb beneath the knees’ arrival before the newborn.

qedem: What is in front or earlier; also the east.

קֶדֶם

The shared root holds the sense of what lies ahead or comes first.

בִּרְכָּיִם

birkayim

GROWS FROM

ברך

b-r-k

Knee; the root also forms the verb “bless.”

The knees here are part of the body that receives a newborn. The same consonants also form the word for blessing, placing bodily welcome beside the language of blessing without erasing the ache in Job’s question.

ALSO GROWS

berekh: Knee.

בֶּרֶךְ

This is the body part named in the verse, where the newborn is received.

barakh: To bless.

בָּרַךְ

The shared root lets the image of physical welcome echo the language of blessing.

Life reaches a person first through being received and nourished, before the person can choose or explain it.

Yet you are the one who draws me out of the belly; you make me lean upon my mother's breasts.
Psalm 22:9 · SDVThe verse names the womb and a mother’s breasts as the first places where a life is received and held.
As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted in Jerusalem.
Isaiah 66:13 · SDVMaternal comfort becomes an image of care that continues to meet a person in distress.
As newborn infants, long for the unmixed milk of the word, so that by it you may grow into deliverance.
1 Peter 2:2 · SDVThe image of a newborn’s milk shows nourishment as the beginning of growth.
For you meet him with blessings of goodness, and you set a crown of pure gold on his head.
Psalm 21:3 · SDV

“Preventest” comes from the same root, ⁨קדם⁩ (q-d-m), meaning to come before or meet. In Job, the knees come before the newborn; here, goodness comes before a person as blessing.
