This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Job spake, and said,

Beneath “spake” is the Hebrew shape of “answered”: speech begins as a response to what has been endured.

When words come after a long silence, they can begin as response before they become explanation. A complete account of what hurts is not a precondition for real speech. The verse holds open that first moment of speaking, before the deeper words unfold.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that words only count once they explain or resolve the pain is undone here: speaking can begin as an answer before the explanation arrives.

וַיַּעַן

GROWS FROM

ענה

ʿ-n-h

to answer, respond

The Hebrew verb beneath “spake” carries the sense “answered,” so speech is framed as a response, not a sound detached from what came before. The voice is relational from its first word: it answers what has been endured, even before it explains it.

ALSO GROWS

ʿānāh: to answer, respond

עָנָה

This verb form names speaking as a reply to what has come before.

maʿăneh: answer, response

מַעֲנֶה

The related noun makes visible the response contained within the act of speaking.

A voice becomes an answer when what is within or before it can finally be spoken.

I will speak, that I may find room. I will open my lips and answer.
Job 32:20 · SDVThe speaker names both the opening of the voice and its answer, linking speech with release.
To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph. I cry out to God with my voice, even to God with my voice, and he bends his ear to me.
Psalm 77:1 · SDVAn inward pressure becomes an audible cry, and the cry itself is a response.
When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have compassion on me.
Mark 10:47 · SDVHearing that Jesus is near turns need into a spoken answer before it becomes a longer explanation.
I will speak, that I may find room. I will open my lips and answer.
Job 32:20 · SDV

Job 32:20 uses the same Hebrew root, ⁨ענה⁩ (ʿ-n-h), “to answer, respond.” It makes explicit what Job 3:2 holds beneath “spake”: a voice can answer what it has endured, and speaking can bring release.
