This verse in the King James

King James wording
To dwell in the clifts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.

The Hebrew word for “dwell” also grows into “neighbor” and “tabernacle,” so even these caves are named as a habitation.

The verse names a human life settled in the earth’s fractures: valley clefts, caves, and bare rock. Even here, the word is “dwell”, a settled habitation, not a passing hiding place. The line holds the severity plainly: the ground itself has become home.

לָשְׁכֹּן

GROWS FROM

shakan

to settle, dwell, or abide

“dwell” in this verse is lashkon. This word comes from the same root as ⁨שָׁכֵן⁩ (shakhen), “neighbor,” and ⁨מִשְׁכָּן⁩ (mishkan), “dwelling place” or “tabernacle.” Hebrew holds dwelling and nearness in one word-family, so even a cave in the valley is named as a habitation.

ALSO GROWS

shakhen: neighbor; one who dwells nearby

שָׁכֵן

The shared root connects dwelling with nearness: to dwell is to have a place among others, even when the place is a cleft in the earth.

mishkan: dwelling place; tabernacle

מִשְׁכָּן

The same root names a place of abiding, showing that the word for dwelling remains the same whether the shelter is a tabernacle or a cave.

When people are pressed by danger or exclusion, caves and rock clefts become places of hiding and dwelling.

When the men of Israel saw that they were in a narrow place, for the people were pressed, then the people hid themselves in caves, and in the thorns, and in the rocks, and in the high places, and in the pits.
1 Samuel 13:6 · SDVDistress drives people into caves and rocks, making the earth’s hollows their refuge.
And they shall enter the caves of the rock, and the hollows of the dust, from the dread of the LORD and from the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to make the earth tremble.
Isaiah 2:19 · SDVThe caves of the earth become shelter when the world feels shaken by a force beyond human control.
The world did not weigh enough for them, wandering over the empty places and the mountains, in the caves and holes of the earth.
Hebrews 11:38 · SDVThe cave-dwellers are named alongside a verdict that the world was not worthy of them.
The world did not weigh enough for them, wandering over the empty places and the mountains, in the caves and holes of the earth.
Hebrews 11:38 · SDV

Hebrews uses the same earth-cave landscape for people it says the world is not worthy of. Their harsh shelter names where they dwell, not what they are worth.
