This verse in the King James

King James wording
Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

The friends’ failure to answer becomes the point where they overreach: a gap in understanding does not make Job guilty.

Here, judgment falls even though the accusers have no answer. The verse names a distortion you can meet now: a missing explanation is treated as permission to condemn. Their verdict reveals the reach of their judgment, not proof of Job’s guilt.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that if you cannot answer every accusation, the accusation must be true.

וַיַּרְשִׁיעוּ

wayyarshi'u

GROWS FROM

רשע

To be wicked or guilty; in a causative form, to declare someone guilty or condemn.

“declared Job wicked” in this verse is wayyarshi'u. English makes “condemned” sound like a standalone verdict, but the Hebrew verb comes from ⁨רשע⁩, a root also used for wickedness and the wicked person. The shared root places declaring guilt in the same moral field as guilt itself, making the accusation visible for scrutiny when the accusers have no answer.

ALSO GROWS

resha: Wickedness or guilt

רֶשַׁע

The noun shares the root’s moral field with the act of condemning Job.

rasha: A wicked or guilty person

רָשָׁע

This branch shows the identity of the person declared guilty is also formed from the same root.

hirshia: To declare guilty or condemn

הִרְשִׁיעַ

This is the verb family behind the friends’ act of pronouncing judgment.

When an accusation outruns hearing or answer, the judgment itself becomes the offense.

The one who returns a word before he hears it, folly and shame are his.
Proverbs 18:13 · SDVThe verdict comes before the hearing, turning a missing understanding into a mark against the judge.
He who aligns the wicked, and he who convicts the aligned one, both are loathed by the LORD.
Proverbs 17:15 · SDVCondemning the just is named as a wrong in itself, even when a verdict has been spoken.
Does our instruction judge a man before it hears him, and know what he does?
John 7:51 · SDVThe question exposes the injustice of judging someone before hearing their answer.
If I align myself, my own mouth will pronounce me wicked; if I say, I am whole, it will make me crooked.
Job 9:20 · SDV

Job 9:20 uses the same ⁨רשע⁩ root in “shall condemn me.” Here it names the friends’ act; there it names the danger that even one’s own mouth can become the condemning voice, showing that the root marks a declaration of guilt, not proof that guilt is established.
