This verse in the King James

King James wording
If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:

A rare interpreter makes a person’s hidden uprightness visible, and mercy speaks next.

Even when your circumstances obscure who you are, this verse leaves room for someone beside you to make your uprightness visible. The verse holds that recognition just before the next verse speaks of mercy and release from the pit.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Suffering does not prove that your uprightness is gone or that rescue is beyond reach; it may be hidden and still be brought into view.

יָשְׁרוֹ

yāšrō

GROWS FROM

יָשַׁר

yāšar

To be straight or upright.

The word carries the sense of straightness beneath “uprightness.” The interpreter reveals a person’s rightness; the verse does not describe the messenger manufacturing it.

ALSO GROWS

yāšār: Straight, upright, or right.

יָשָׁר

This branch makes the image of uprightness concrete: something straight that can be seen.

mîšôr: Level ground or a plain.

מִישׁוֹר

The same root can describe level ground, linking uprightness with a straight, open course.

לְהַגִּיד

lehaggîd

GROWS FROM

נָגַד

nāgad

To be conspicuous or stand in front; in this form, to declare or make known.

“declare” in this verse is lehaggîd. The verb translated “shew” can mean to bring something forward through speech. The interpreter makes the person’s uprightness stand before them as something seen and named.

ALSO GROWS

neged: In front of, or opposite.

נֶגֶד

This branch carries the sense of what is set before someone, as the interpreter sets uprightness before the person.

nāgîd: A leader or prince.

נָגִיד

This related word evokes one who stands at the front, echoing the interpreter’s role in bringing something forward.

A messenger or teacher makes a truth about God or a person’s right course visible through words.

Good and straight is the LORD. Therefore he aims those who miss the mark down the way.
Psalm 25:8 · SDVThe LORD’s uprightness becomes visible through teaching that shows a person the way.
For the lips of the priest should guard knowledge, and they should seek the instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 2:7 · SDVThe priest’s words make knowledge available as a messenger of the LORD.
No one has ever seen God. The only-born God, who is at the breast of the Father, has led him out.
John 1:18 · SDVThe Son makes the unseen Father known through declaration.
Then he favors him, and says, Deliver him from descending into the pit; I have found a ransom.
Job 33:24 · SDV

The next verse shows what follows the interpreter’s disclosure: God is gracious and speaks deliverance from the pit. The revealing of uprightness is the hinge between what is hidden and the words of rescue.
