King James wording
King James Version
Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,THE KEY
What is spoken becomes more than sound when another person receives it deeply enough to hear it back as your own words.
THE MEANING
Your words reach another person’s ear and remain there as a voice they can return to you. Speaking and hearing meet in one shared moment: the words are not only uttered, they are received.
THE ROOT
אֶשְׁמָע
eshmaʿ
GROWS FROM
שמע
sh-m-ʿ
Hear, listen, heed; when the context calls for a response, hear and respond.
English “heard” can sound like sound merely reaching the ear, but שָׁמַע (shamaʿ, hear or listen) can also carry attentive reception. Here the listening is concrete: the speaker says the words have been received well enough to be repeated back.
ALSO GROWS
shemuʿah: Report, news, or something heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
A report is something carried into hearing, showing that this root can name what is received as well as the act of listening.
hishmiaʿ: Cause to hear; make heard or announce.
הִשְׁמִיעַ
This causative form illuminates the verse’s movement from words being spoken to a listener receiving them.
THE PATTERN
In scripture, hearing carries speech into a receiver, where it can be answered, kept, or returned.
In my narrow place I call out to the LORD, and I cry out to my God. From his temple he hears and answers my voice, and my cry comes into his ears. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant hears and responds. But those on the good soil are the ones who, in a noble and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bring forth fruit by remaining beneath the weight.THE THREAD
In my narrow place I call out to the LORD, and I cry out to my God. From his temple he hears and answers my voice, and my cry comes into his ears. Both verses join קוֹל (qol, voice or sound) with שמע (shamaʿ, hear). Job describes words received by a human listener; Psalm describes a cry received by God, the same language carries a voice into the one who hears it.
