King James wording
King James Version
Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.THE KEY
Three commands to look, see, and behold turn the sky into a scale that exposes the limits of your own vantage.
THE MEANING
The verse keeps turning your attention outward and upward: look, see, behold. The clouds stand higher than you, making the limit of your vantage visible rather than theoretical. What you can see already extends beyond your position.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that your vantage is large enough to measure everything above you.
THE ROOT
גָּבְהוּ
gāḇəhû
GROWS FROM
גבה
g-b-h
To be high or lofty; to rise above.
This root can describe both being high and raising something high, so “higher” carries more than a comparison of levels: it names a position above another point of view. The clouds make that difference visible, placing your own vantage within a larger scale.
ALSO GROWS
gāḇōah: The state of being high.
גָּבֹהַּ
The same root names the elevation the clouds visibly occupy.
higbîah: To raise or lift high.
הִגְבִּיהַּ
This form shows the root also naming height as something brought above a lower point.
THE PATTERN
Looking at creation enlarges the reader’s scale, making visible what the immediate human vantage cannot contain.
When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you set firm.Lift your eyes to the heights, and see who created these, who brings out their host by number. He calls them all by their nature, by the abundance of his strength, for he is firm in power; not one is lacking. For the unseen things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, grasped through the things made, his ageless power and divinity, so that they stand without a word in their defense.THE THREAD
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my plans than your plans. The word translated “higher” in both verses comes from גבה (g-b-h), “to be high or lofty.” Job makes the height visible in the clouds; Isaiah carries that same vertical image into the distance between human ways and the ways named in the verse.
