King James wording
King James Version
Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee.THE KEY
A ransom is a covering, yet even a great covering cannot turn aside the blow.
THE MEANING
The verse meets you where wrath is present and no payment can turn its course. A great ransom does not guarantee escape; what is at stake cannot be settled by the sheer size of what is offered.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that enough wealth can buy a way out of every consequence: some danger is not moved by the scale of the payment.
THE ROOT
כֹּפֶר
kofer
GROWS FROM
כפר
k-p-r
To cover over; to provide a covering.
The word for ransom also carries the image of a covering. The verse says that even a great covering cannot shield you from what is coming.
ALSO GROWS
kaphar: To cover over.
כָּפַר
This verb makes the covering image within ransom visible.
kippurim: Coverings; atonements.
כִּפֻּרִים
This related form carries the same root into the language of covering.
יַטֶּךָּ
yatteka
GROWS FROM
נטה
n-t-h
To stretch out, incline, or turn aside.
“bend you aside” in this verse is yatteka. The verb translated “deliver” carries the image of turning aside. Ransom and turning meet in the verse: even a great payment cannot bend the course away.
ALSO GROWS
natah: To stretch out, extend, or incline.
נָטָה
Its range of movement illuminates the image of turning aside in the verse.
matteh: A staff or rod; an extension held out.
מַטֶּה
This related form gives the root’s stretching-out image a tangible shape.
THE PATTERN
Scripture treats ransom as a question of whether a life can be released, not as a matter of accumulating enough payment.
He does not lift any ransom, and he does not consent, though you multiply the bribes. No man can buy back his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his living soul as a ransom for many.THE THREAD
Then he favors him, and says, Deliver him from descending into the pit; I have found a ransom.Job 33:24 uses the same Hebrew כֹּפֶר (kofer, covering or ransom): there a ransom is found; here even a great ransom cannot turn you aside. The shared word holds both the possibility of release and the limit of payment in one tension.
