This verse in the King James

King James wording
With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt.

The cloud can cover the light without ending it, and even its concealment remains under command.

The verse speaks now to moments when something intervenes between you and the light: concealment does not prove disappearance. The cloud’s power to obscure and the light’s appearance remain within God’s command, even while the reason for the cloud stays unstated.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that what cannot be seen has ceased to exist.

כִּסָּה

kissah

GROWS FROM

כסה

to cover, conceal

“covereth” in this verse is kissah. The same root names both the act of covering and, in ⁨מִכְסֶה⁩ (mikhseh, a covering), the covering itself. The light’s blocked visibility is an added layer over it; the verse does not say the light ceases to exist.

ALSO GROWS

mikhseh: covering, roof

מִכְסֶה

This noun from the same root makes the covering a thing laid over what is beneath it, like the cloud over the light.

mekhasseh: one that covers; covering

מְכַסֶּה

This participle keeps the root’s action in view: the light is being covered, rather than described as extinguished.

אוֹר

or

GROWS FROM

אור

to be light, shine

The verse names light itself as what is covered, so the cloud changes what can be seen without changing what the word says is there. The same root can name both light and a luminary that bears it.

ALSO GROWS

ma’or: luminary, light-bearing body

מָאוֹר

This branch names a bearer of light, joining the light that is hidden here with a source that can remain present while its radiance is obscured.

orah: light

אוֹרָה

This form preserves the same root in another word for light, keeping the focus on the light beneath the intervening cloud.

A veil can hide radiance without ending its presence or its work.

And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel, and it was cloud and darkness; and it lit the night, and the one did not draw near to the other all the night.
Exodus 14:20 · SDVThe same cloud is darkness to one side and gives light to the other, so the veil does not have a single effect on everyone who encounters it.
He sets darkness as his hiding place; around him is his booth of dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
Psalm 18:11 · SDVDarkness and clouds conceal what remains present within them.
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not take hold of it.
John 1:5 · SDVLight continues to shine even where darkness surrounds it.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
Genesis 1:3 · SDV

Genesis and Job share ⁨אוֹר⁩ (or, light), the same Hebrew word. Genesis names light at its appearing; Job shows it covered, linking the hidden light to the light that remains.
