This verse in the King James

King James wording
O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.

The “wind” that makes life feel fleeting is also the breath that makes life present.

Your life is called wind: breath is present and moving, yet it cannot be held. The eye’s “no more” is a hard line of grief, good cannot be promised as the next thing it sees. The verse leaves that uncertainty exposed.

רוּחַ

ruach

GROWS FROM

רוח

ruach

To blow or breathe; moving air.

The English “wind” makes life sound like something that simply passes away, while ⁨רוּחַ⁩ also means breath: movement that is passing and the very condition of being alive. The line holds both truths at once; the life that cannot be grasped is nonetheless breathed now.

ALSO GROWS

ruach: Wind, air in motion.

רוּחַ

This is the word Job uses to name life as fleeting movement.

rucho: His breath or wind; the possessive form of the same word.

רוּחוֹ

In Job 34:14, this form appears alongside “breath” as what can be gathered back.

חַיָּי

chayyai

GROWS FROM

חיה

chayah

To live; to be alive.

The word rendered “my life” belongs to the family of “living” and “alive,” not an abstract possession. Beside ⁨רוּחַ⁩, it frames life as living movement whose continuation the eye cannot secure.

ALSO GROWS

chai: Living; alive.

חַי

This form names the state of being alive beneath Job’s word for life.

chayyim: Life; living existence.

חַיִּים

This is the familiar life-word from the same root family.

The breath that animates life remains ungraspable: its presence sustains, and its absence exposes our dependence.

And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDVLife appears as breath received into the formed body, joining breath to embodied life.
You hide your face, and they are shaken; you gather in their breath, and they breathe out and return to their dust.
Psalm 104:29 · SDVThe breath that sustains the living can be taken away, and bodies return to dust.
The breath blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so is everyone who is born of breath.
John 3:8 · SDVWind moves beyond control or sight, echoing the verse’s image of life as present yet ungraspable.
If he sets his heart upon man, if he gathers to himself his breath and his breathing.
Job 34:14 · SDV

The same Hebrew word, ⁨רוּחַ⁩ (ruach, wind or breath), names life as “wind” here and is rendered “spirit” in Job 34:14. There, gathered breath means the end of flesh; here, the same word makes life’s fragility tangible.
